First time in for service, couple questions

I brought my truck in for the bed recall and they finished that. I then mentioned the bed vibration I have at times and the accompanying rear window rattle. I have the manual slider for the back window

I called the service dept today and the lady told me they are ordering a new rear window channel to stop the rattle and a new driveshaft to stop the bed vibration. The good news is I wasn't imagining these problems.

Did any of these fix the problem on your trucks? How far into the TSB do they tell you to replace the driveshaft, and what would be next if that doesn't work? Wouldn't it be nice if I picked it up with a nice new aluminum one under there...a man can dream can't he.

Thanks

Happy...by 'bed vibration', are y'all referring to the infamous BED SHAKE aka 'jello bed' reported by many (including myself), i.e. the quaking bed that can be noted by watching it in your left side view mirror.

If so, there's no cure for that specific mystery shake. I can't imagine a dealer replacing a driveshaft for that issue. The driveshaft replacement is one of many 'cures' for the driveline vibe reported here by many and noted in TSB 04-25-7 and 04-25-8 and the earlier 03-03-3.

Yeah exactly what you described. My truck rides awesome when that bed is still but just like you said looking in my side mirror I can watch that bed start shaking all of a sudden. The strange thing is it can happen on a perfectly flat road. But when the bed starts moving it sends a very annoying vibration into my cab. I wanted them to install that frame dampner but they said they had to follow the TSB. The TSB they are using is the 04-25-8, and they used another for my rear window rattle.

So do all these trucks suffer from bed shake? The strange thing is when I bought the truck it did it alot, then I rotated the tires and the shake decreased and happend less often.

The upper run channel did not fix the rattle in my rear window, there is a second part to that tsb where you have to remove the rear glass and install a foam-rubber seal all along the glass where it contacts the body this resolved my issue but beware its an entire day job. I stopped in once to see if my truck was done and walked in the door to find my entire interior minus the front seats and dash was in the bed of my truck. But its back together now and its as quiet as the first day I had it.

Thanks for the replies,

I'll let you guys know what happens on Tuesday since the parts are "supposed" to arive Monday.

Trierguy, thanks for that insite...I sure hope this fixes mine and if not, I'll make sure I don't pop in to see how its going. I'm not sure I want to see my truck all tore apart.

150cable, I don't notice any vibe problems at all turning first thing. I think my posi is working perfect. Its out of the blue with this bed shake, on a flat road it just starts going...It's so agravating, and with the window squeeking all around behind me I want to turn around and punch the thing out.

The good thing so far for me is the fact that the dealer admits both issues exist.

Happy G...the bed shake is a profound mystery. Some, not all F150s (perhaps the minority) do experience the issue. Most of us just consider it a 'characteristic' of the new model and not a defect. It doesn't seem to be identified with any particular model, wheelbase, etc.

I noted that the frequency of the shake changed somewhat when I recently moved my spare tire permanently under my hard tonneau...the shake completely disappeared when the bed was fully loaded with furnishings. So far, changes in tire pressure, aftermarket shocks, tire replacements, etc. have not cured the shake. To date, I haven't heard of anybody that found the dampner install cured the issue either. IMO, it's a frame and shock mount geometry problem.

Don't let it become an obsession...it used to bother the hell out of me.

Curmugeon,

I'm surprised the aftermarket shocks didn't help the situation. I was considering putting some bilsteins on there but I think I'll hold off for the time being.

If they don't know what to do to fix the problem, I just want them to figure out how to keep it from flowing into my cab. If the bed has to shake so be it, but I would prefer not to feel it. Much easier to just not look in my side mirror. Anyway lets see what happens when I pick it up.

My bed has a jello shake I can see in the mirror when I'm somewhere above 40+ and go over small road bumps/dips that you might not see but are definately there.

I don't have any rattling (I have a one piece rear window).

Actually I didn't even know it was doing this until reading online about bed vibrations and looking at it in the mirror more closely occasionally.

I don't notice it on interstate highways.

To me it's a non-issue, it's a truck and seems like something I'd expect going over road imperfections. Compared to going over the same roads in my '99 Ranger I'd say the '04 F-150 is like riding on butter.

Just got 05 supercrew and had to take it in to address the vibration problem as well as bed problem Had taken it in once befoe and they rebalanced tires but did not do any good.
They ran a "EV" test today and the results indicated a drivetrain problem. So I will be driving a loaner Taurus for a few days.
Hope the new part they are ordering will fix problem.
If not , lemon law time.
