05' Died on me...happen to anyone else?

I'm writing this if anyone else has had this happen. Pulled up to a light this morning and came to a stop. No hard driving prior and all gauges were showing normal. Came to the stop and suddenly a warning buzzer with corresponding engine and battery warning indicators came up; in addition to the digital screen (odometer/thermometer) saying check gauges. Truck stalled…no sputtering, no heaving, nothing, just dead. Put the truck into park turned the key and it started right up and didn’t do it again the rest of the way. There are only 6k on the truck and its only 7 months old. Last oil change 3k prior. 05 F-150 5.4 Liter, no modifications in the engine and no chip. Running 91 octane and filled up three days prior from a reputable big name chain with no prior problems. Any ideas before I take it if for a check?

If you have a code reader, give it a shot and see what code was registered. AutoZone and some other parts stores will read the codes for you free of charge. If you can find that out, at least you'll know what the deal is before you take it to the stealership.

I don't have a code reader, but will go to AutoZone and see if they will do it. Liked your "mis-spelling" at the end; very true. Guess this hasn’t happened to you I imagine then?

Not sure on an 05, but there is a TSB for the stalling problem on 04's. A reflash at the dealer fixed it. My 04 was built in August; if yours is an early 05 it may apply.

Unhappy

Actually my truck is an 05' supercrew lariat 5.4 w/355 gears. Yesterday there was some expectation of heavy rain and hail, with only 4300 miles on my truck I didn't want the hail to damage my truck so I pulled it into my warehouse at work. I put the truck in reverse, keep in mind it was raining pretty hard already and gave it a little gas to hurry into the warehouse before the hail started coming down. Stopped completely, put it in drive and it died on me. Park, started it up again, no problems, pulled around to the warehouse came to a stop, put it in reverse and it died on me. All in all it happened 4 times within a 1 minute time period. Finally got it in the warehouse, showed the truck off to a couple of my employees and let it sit. About 2 hours later, it started fine and it hasn't happened since. I guess if it happens again I'll take it in and have them check it out. I didn't have any warning lights or check engine lights come on so I doubt it will show up on their machines. I guess we'll see what happens.

I had the same issue. Tried the re-flash and it didn't work either. What they ended up doing was replacing the throttle position sensor and it's worked fine since then. There are a few other guys that had the same issue and the TPS (throttle position sensor) fixed it.

Good luck.

Thanks for your guys replies. Now I'll go in fully prepared for dealing with the dealership; with your experiences and solutions or lack there of. Thanks again.

"Knocking on wood" - Hasn't happened to me on this truck, but I had a T-Bird where some specks of something got in the gas line and it stalled a few times. I can't imagine that would be your problem, though. I'll be interested in what you find.

Best of luck.

just a side question, if you have no tuning installed, why in the heck are you running 91 octane?

Bring it in for service.
As well if you do a search you will find many threads talking about the stalling problem and the TSB's that Ford has for them.
Mine has been in 4 times now, and each time they replaced something or reflashed the PCM.
Later Trev

My 04' was in the shop 3 times for this problem, the reflash did not fix it, finally it did it again and the service engine light stayed on, when I took it in, their was an FX4 there with the same prob. they replaced my throttle body and replaced the computer on the FX4, so far my truck has never done it again.
