1714 - Performance 91 = better gas mileage

Could it be my imagination? I've been running the "87 - tune" setting in my truck for a couple of months now with better than expected results. I recently changed to the "91" setting and filled up w/ premium gas. The shift points are definitely even better than the previous setting. The truck seems to be sipping gas now instead of gulping it down. Could it be that my gas mileage has improved providing I don't drive like a maniac?

Strangely, the 20 cent difference in California gas is the same amount as when the gas was 90 cents. Premium was 1.10. Now regular is 257.9, premium is 278.9. Premium is looking better and better.

I actually am disappointed with the 87 tune and notice little to no change. Now 91 tune is very nice and I wish I could afford to run it all the time, but almost 3.00 a gallon is a little too steep.

I'm with Eddy, the 87 tune pretty much stinks. Waiting for X-cal2....

When I was running on the 91 tune it rocked... but gas milage plummeted due to my desire to bark 'em at every stop light/sign.

Gas price divided by miles per gallon equals gas cost per mile.

Let's assume:
87 octane @ $2.18/gal. and 14 mpg = $0.156 per mile
91 octane @ $2.33/gal. and 17 mpg = $0.137 per mile

It's actually cheaper to run the higher octane.

What mileage are you getting out of the 91 octane program?

Your math looks good but I dont think anyone is getting an extra 3 mpg's on the higher octane tune. I get about 1 mpg better.

My numbers:
87 octane @ 2.17/gal and 14.5 mpg = $0.150 per mile
93 octane @ 2.37/gal and 15.5 mpg = $0.153 per mile

The .003 difference isn't even worth worrying about. The fact is that for me I like the way the truck drives better and apparently doesn't cost any more than 87 octane per mile to drive it.

Just for the heck of it, lets assume the milage is the same on 87 and 93 octane. If I had to put 25 gallons in my tank and the 93 octane was 20 cents morethan the 87 octane, it'll only cost an extra 5 bucks to run the 93 and enjoy the benefits of the better tune. I would bet that most people on here blow more than 5 bucks a week at work getting drinks and snacks out of the vending machines at work.

Im glad that you people started this thread, now you got me thinking about restoring the 91 tune on my truck instead of the 87.

High octane is the way to go. $0.20 a gallon more is chicken feed with the price of gas the way it is now. Sunoco 87-octane is $2.23 a gallon. Sunoco Super Pure 93-octane is $2.43 a gallon. That’s only a five-dollar difference on 25 gallons. I fill up about three times a month. I enjoy having the extra power so I write it off to entertainment. I get around 16 to 16.2mpg local driving but next month I’m fixen to take a trip to Lackland AFB. That’s going to be about 2,480 miles round-trip. I’m hoping to get into the 20mpg bracket on highway driving.

I was under the impression that the 87 tuner made a noticeable difference? I was thinking about buying a tuner and only running the 87 tune. I posted the question on here before and I thought everyone was pleased with the 87 tune.

I have the same question. '05 Supercab 5.4 4x4 getting 15mph city and highway combo. Very happy with truck and towing ability. Don't want to see the mileage suffer or blow money needlessly, BUT, being a gearhead guy I'm always lusting for more. Don't want to blow money needlessly!

It's easyist to explain about the tuner this way. When I have it set to factory tune, the shifts are soft, it shifts too early, and it doesn't seem quite right.
Put in the 87 tune, and the shifts are snappy, the gears lug less, and it's sports like.
On the 91 octaine setting, (not sure about a 93 octaine setting?) You do get more power, but the shift changes really are more important in everyday driving than the wide open throttle power.

87-octane vs. 93-octane perspective

If the only tune I had was the 87-octane performance it would still be worth every penny spent on the tuner. Why? Throttle-lag is completely eliminated, rev-limiter raised to allow WOT up-shifts to occur at peak rpm, up-shifts are firm to hard depending on the amount of throttle being applied, goes open-loop instantly at WOT, speed-limiter is lifted and then there’s a host of other little tweaks’ like disengaging the A/C compressor at WOT, etc., etc., etc. Better fuel mileage is also a by-product of performance tuning.

The 93-octane max-performance tune is just icing on the cake because of the increase in timing which equates to more hp & torque but all the other benny’s are there right from the get go with the 87-octane performance tune.

Sitting on 35" tires and a lift, I am not stomping full throttle or hitting the rev limiter too often. I can say that the 87 did nothing for me. I notice a little difference in lag and cleaner shifts but thats about it. Now when I put the 91 tune in its a whole new world. I still dont stomp on it, but passing gear is great on the truck with high octane. The cost is a little steep and I havent really looked at mileage changes, but if it came down to the 87 tune only I wouldnt have bought the tuner (well I need it because of the tire correction).
Truck performs great on the 91, at all rpms.
