Question Has anyone replaced 18" wheels with 17"s?

I am thinking about replacing my 18" FX4 wheels with 17" wheels. Has anyone else done this? What were the results? Did you get less gas mileage, or more? I just want to know what to expect. And yes, I did several searches but the results did not answer all my questions. Thanks.

I replaced my lariat wheels with 17" American Eagle's because I wanted more tire and less rim...kinda the classic lifted truck look. My gas mileage went down but not because of the wheel change (it was the tire change) It's the overal diameter of the tire that will effect things like performance, gas mileage, speedometer errors etc. What tires are you planning on running if you change your wheels?

I am going to go with the stock size 255/70 R 17 and the standard FX4 aluminum wheels. There are many more choices available for 17 inch wheels than there are for 18s and I also want to get more torque for towing.

Mine came with the LT275/65R18. I still have those and use them for the summer. For winter I use a set of BFG ATs in LT265/70R17. There is only a 1/4" difference in diameter, so I see little change except for the colder weather and reformulated gas for winter.

Rim size shouldn't affect mileage tire size will. I have 17's when I bought the wheels the guy wanted me to get 18's But I to like more tire than wheel. More tire better ride!

I replaced the 18's on my Lariat with 17's off an FX4 so I could run BFG 315/70/17 Hummer take offs. I can get those tires all day long at $75-$85 ea. I didn't like my tire options in 18" so the 17's made more sense for me.

If you change the tire heighth very much, your speedometer will be off. That can be corrected with a tuner...Kevin

I've got 17x8"s aftermarket. They are six shooters. I wanted some meatier tires and the 18's didn't have many options. Not to mention, I think the 18" Fx4 rims are uuuuuuuuuuuugly !!.

i know it would prolly be more expensive sinece u have a 4x4, but why not consider getting a gear change... u would get the same result without sacrificing looks....JMHO
