Thank you all very much for the words of *CAUTION* from those of you who have been burned by this issue before. I know what you are talking about. Losing low end torque when you mess with an exhaust system is a real possibility. I had the very issue when I put straight pipes on my mustang. Waste of money because I had to go back and fix it!

One thing I learned from this discussion is that mandel bends are a MUST. I'd like to go with the Magnaflow lighning style cat back system but I can't sport $600 to do it!! That's crazy!

Since I've already got about $80 invested in this project (Gibson tips) I'm going to TRY it. If it sucks, then you guys warned me!! I'll find a well respected custom exhuast shop with a mandrel bender. So wish me luck! Now, with that being said.. any advice on which si/do muffler to go with? I want to keep the 2.5" in pipe if possible. Would the 14218 muffler work for me?? I can get my hands on one of those for under $100.

Thanks again for all the help! I really appreciate it.
Either the 12158 or the 12268. You don't want too long of a muffler doing the side exit, and those two are close to what magnaflow puts in their systems.(the 158 is 14" long and the 268 is 18") Both are 5X8 oval aluminized...Kevin

The stainless steel version of 12158 (14") is 14218. Is it worth the extra $25?

I think so. They're nice and shiny. Both carry the same warranty though.

It's personal taste. I bought the stainless steel as I like the look. Another consideration is whether or not the salt the roads during winter months. Not sure it would hurt the aluminum though.

This sure is fun spending your money...

No doubt. When can I spend yours?

Thanks guys.. The ss 14" magnaflow (14218) is on it's way. I'll let you know how it goes. i will even post pics if F150online.com would recognize me as a "user". That's for a different post. HA!

Consider me a ginnea pig for the 'cheap skates' that want to put exhaust on their truck. Hopefully I'll have good results.

B&G...I won't second-guess your selection of a Magnaflow #14218, but I can assure y'all that a side exit 14" muffler is going to be L-O-U-D. The Mag catback side exit system (Lightning-style) with the 18" muffler is annoyingly loud according to some who have posted here. You may be the first to install a 14"...let us know what it sounds like.

BTW...a post above identified the #12258 as a 14''...I believe it should be correctly noted to be an 18" instead.

I did originally post an incorrect part number, but edited the post to reflect the correct one. Sorry...Kevin

Mission accomplished. The system was installed this morning. First things first... I chickened out with the 14" muffler. While I was waiting to get my truck up on the lift, the Magnaflow 18" was on display staring me right in the face. I ended up buying that muffler from the muffler shop. Not stainless, but aluminized.
They installed the muffler and did not do any mandel bending of the pipes exiting from the muffler. I must say, I'm very impressed with this set up. The 18" muffler is PERFECT! Exactly what I was looking for. Sound and performance is great. It's not loud unless you really put your foot into it. The way the muffler shop described the sound is, "its just enough sound to let everyone know that it's a pickup truck leaving the stop light." I have not lost ANY low end torque (that I can feel) and the truck seems to rev easier. The Gibson tips look GREAT sticking out in front of the rear passenger tire. I'd like to take pictures and post them but for some reason F150online doesn't recognize me as a user when trying to create a new picture gallery. So if you'd like to see pictures of the custom set up that I have done, leave me your email address and I'll send you some digital shots.

The bottom line.. Magnaflow gets my vote. And I'm glad that I didn't spend the money for the cat back system. This works just as well and it only cost me a total of $250.

With the 14" is it loud? I'm stuck with an extra muffler and a buddy of mine seems interested, but I don't want to sell him something that is WAAAY to loud.

I can't post pics on this site! It doesn't recognize Black&GrayFX4 as a user. ???

Even open pipes not too loud

I just finished putting on the Flowmaster super 40 cat-back system dual out side exit. After removing the Stock cat-back, I started up just to hear what the truck sounded like with open pipes. Not really loud at all. Those four cats muffle the sound pretty well all by themselves.

The 4” by 9” with 14” body is not loud at all. It’s a little louder than the OEM but has a deep throaty sound. It doesn’t drone at any speed either

I got a pic in my gallery; click my sig to see
