Not to mention that the resell value is much higher for a 4x4. At least in these parts,,, it snows here. You'll easily get your $2000 investment back for the 4x4 when you go to sell.

4x4 here. Living in OH I'd think you'd really want the 4x4. Winter, resale value... unless you live down south and do not go off road, get a 4x4. Not that much extra wear & tear unless you use it constantly. Also, your insurance will be slightly higher thanks to the high cost of repairs if you smash into that school bus.

well, I don't have a Larait, but I have 2wd on my supercrew XLT. Big mistake...Ive had to get towed out a few times already in the winter for trying to be stupid and seeing what a 2D drive truck is capable of doing in heavy snow! It does fine, but don't ever go through anything above a 12 inches of heavy wet snow! I had to get towed out by an F-350, once a Dodge Ram, and the 3rd time a F-250! My next trucks going to be a 4x4, and if your worried about more costly to fix or something on a 4x4, it payes off in the long run after giving each guy a hand full of money each time you have to get towed out. Never again 2wd for me

There are obvious benifits to owning a 4x4. But what about the hidden stuff?

-How much extra weight does a 4x4 yield vs 2x4?
-Does the 4x4 cause more drag on the drivetrain?

We bought a 4x4 this time, but I'm still wondering if we've given up some towing power and gas mileage do to the extra weight and drag....but I'm just guessing. Anyone have any actual data on this?

It's a couple hundred pounds... big deal!!! Think you give up 500lbs in towning capacity. Woop-ta-dee-do!

4x4 here. Like was said, it's not a truck without 4x4! And I read somewhere (probably here) that with the vacuum locking hubs in our trucks, it disconnects the front axles from the wheels when not in 4x4 so they don't spin along all the time, and the transfer case takes the center/front axle out too. So if that is the case, when not in 4x4 none of the components are spinning or wearing. Maybe I'm wrong about that locking hub thing but that's just what I read somewhere.

If you live anywhere that gets snow (more than once a year), it would be a good idea to get a 4X4 truck. Of course I have a 4X4 as we get more than our fair share of snow.

I have 2wd lariat and I regret not getting the 4wd. Even though I want use it much. The main reason is the 4wd looks better and tougher. Oh well 4 more years and then trade up to 4wd.
