3rd Brake Light LEAK!!

I know some of you had this problem. Mine leaked today and my back seat got totally wet. What did you guys do to thr 3rd brake light to make it stop leaking. I would go to FORD but theyll probably say its because of my Sirius antenna I ran through the light.

I was told by the service dept. That it could possibly be the seal is on upside down.

If not, take it in ASAP.

or because of this:

Caught mine from morning dew on the roof...as I drove, noticed that water was dripping.

Brought it to the dealer - they replaced the entire lamp assembly and gasket. Been through storms, rain, snow...no problems yet!

Take it in...someone else here went to Home Depot and bought some sort of gasket. He said it worked great and it cost like $5.00 or so.

I live 2 minutes from a Dealership...was no biggy for me to bring it in.

I brought mine in even with the sirius antenna and they replaced it with a newer unit. It looked like it had a thicker gasket on it.

There is a TSB on it so it's an unquestioned warranty item. If you're too freaked out, then pull your antenna wire out of the gasket before you bring it in (can you handle broadcast radio for the drive to the dealership?). Let them replace the light and gasket and then re-install your antenna wire as soon as you get back home.

It ain't all that complicated.

Well I tried to leave it on and Ford Said NO!! They can not fix with any mods done. I think Im gonna do it myself. Has anyone sealed theres on there own?

Ford had to call some glass company in to do it. He told me that they just put silicone around the light. Ford never mentiones replacing the light and gasket.

What should I do?

Ummm I'd be pissed! Tell your dealer to look at the TSB for the 3rd break light leak! They replace the entire light and gasket! You shouldn't have to pay a penny out of your pocket! Or just go to another dealer since that one is being stupid with you

Yeah the dealership I go to is BEACH FORD in Myrtle Beach, SC they told me that they know there is a TSB on it but its a fix and not a replace TSB. If you live in the area dont buy a car from them go to CONWAY FORD. Now that I got that off my chest.

I think Im gonna go to Home Depot and get Frost King "d" Profile X-Treme Rubber Weatherseal.

Yes, I found some black all weather foam stripping at Home Depot that was the perfect width and thickness for the job. I think it was less than two bucks for the roll and it worked like a champ.

I took bamorris2 suggestion and did the Home Depot rubber weather seal fix, it completely fixed my problem and is very easy to do your self.

Ill even provide a link to the same stuff I used..

A coupel weeks ago, after washing my truck, I discovered that I too have this problem of a leaking 3rd brake light. I removed the brake light and, like everyone else, found that the foam seal was not properly seated around the perimeter of the light (the top of the seal was way off).

So instead of wasting a day at the dealer, I just went down to my local Home Depot, and picked up some high quality rubber weatherseal (to be exact, it was Frost King "D" Profile X-Treme Rubber Weatherseal). I thoroughly cleaned/removed the old seal from the brake light, then applied the new stuff. I tested it out several times, and absolutely no leaks!!! I could tell just from looking at the difference in seals, that the rubber one that I installed would seal out water MUCH better than even a properly-installed factory seal would.

Well, try taking in to the other dealership for the work!

Mine leaked, repaired no question asked. Heck my dealer even wanted to replace the entire rear seat cover to get rid of the water stain, I told them to clean it instead.

Good luck either way.

If not, your dealer should reference TSB 04-20-5. Part number for the upgraded third brake light assembly is 5L3Z-13A613-AA.
