flashed !

https://www.f150online.com/galleries....cfm?gnum=4704 after 1 year and (5) times in the shop for vibe, miss, steering nibble and engine light on. i can say its fixed. I THINK. i sat in the shop while the pad was removed and coating applies, rotors turned, pcm reflashed and i was given an oasis sheet, sticker applied to engine bay of truck with new codes for pcm. on the way home i did a rolling stop and matted the throttle, the truck actually down shifted and got 3 or 4 feet of rubber on the new 265/70 17 good years. the dealer even reset my speedo to show tire size change. IMA happy camper already.

I don't understand why Ford doesn't flash the PCM on every truck that comes into the shop. Even though we pay close to $40,000, Ford does not seem to think owner satisfaction is important.

I had it done this week and it changed my entire outlook of my truck. For 29,000 miles I have driven around with my finger on the OD switch to ensure I could get the power and transmission change if I needed it. Now, I don't even think about putting my finger on that switch. It has good throttle response and the transmission down shifts great.

I left this truck with the dealer two other times for a PCM flash and they would not do it. They claimed the truck was within the parameter and it was not needed. The third time, I told them it was a safty issue so, they flashed it. Now I am 100% satisfied.

I just can't believe it took 29,000 miles to get to this point.

This is called a "Re-Flash" which involves computer tuning to the PCM on our trucks. Lots of owners were complaining about "throttle response" (time it takes to actually start moving after your step on the accelerator).

Basically what happens is an owner is unhappy with the response/lagging he gets when stepping on the gas. You then take it in for service, the dealership hooks their computer up to your trucks computer, and "Re-Flashes" your computers memory to tell the truck to respond in a quicker manner.

Hope this broke it down enough for you. If not, then I'm not sure what else can be said.

KP SCAB,

Don't appologize for being new. There are a TON of posts on the issue of the PCM Flash issue, do a search to learn more than you want to know about the issue.

But I'll give you the skinny. 5.4L engines are drive by wire. They have been exibiting a bit of throttle lag due to this change. Especially on the early build 2004's. There is a TSB out against this problem and Ford has a 'quick fix' for the throttle lag. If you complain to you dealer about rough idle and throttle lag, they will reflash your PCM giving it new parameters. In essance this is changing the variables that you engines uses to determine ignition points and shift points. It makes the engine seem more responsive and a bit more powerful if you have a reflash done. But, thats not to say that if you are driving a newer F150 5.4L and not noticing a throttle lag, that you should worry about it. There might be a good chance that if you own a 2005 that a reflash wouldn't help much. Again, welcome and do a quick search on this issue and you will learn more than you wanted to know about PCM reflashes.

K, Re-flashing the PCM essentially gives the truck New software. So folks have had problems with engine studdering and poor throttle response, Reflash fixes this.

The "Pad" is a recall for a Butyal Pad on the Cargo box that can trap moisture causing pre-mature Rot on the Box.

The rolling stop thing means he stopped and held the brake a little while hitting the Gas ( I think ) and was impressed with the trucks new response

Edit, wow, two other replies while I typed that

as you come to a stop sign ( if theres no other cars ) dont fully stop, at about 5 to 8 miles an hour punch the throttle.

( hence rolling stop )

I kept reading this on the "rolling stop" wondering why you guys keep defining it.. then I re-read my post.. sorry the question I was asking about the rolling stop was not what a rolling stop is.. but what was meant by "did a rolling stop and matted the throttle" now that I read everything a bit closer I understand.. and feel like an idot for asking a dumb question.

I wonder if this will help my 12mpg no matter what I do. The Ford dealer actually told me that if I wanted better mileage to drive 55mph. WTFEver!! I usually do 5 over with the cruise on and I cannot get no better than 12 with a tonneau cover. I am tired of it. I would love to get the 14+ all my friends get out of their 05s.

Thats what i get on the highway as long as i'm not running a hundred. when I'm on the highway i usually push it till the pcm shuts it down and then back off the throttle by about 3 to 5 mph and lock the cruise on.
