Aftermarket Hitch People!!
Aftermarket Hitch People!!
I heard from a Ford Rep today that they found that the aftermarket trailer hitches are causing vibrations. I guess that there is some kind of big counterweight type thing under the back of the truck, and when they install the aftermarket hitch they remove this and it causes vibration. I have seen an acme hitch on a truck that I had to remove and the weight bracket looking thing was thrown in the bed of the truck and it was pretty heavy, like it would have made a difference. I dont know if this is a way for Ford to say buy their hitch or if it really does cause a vibration. Just an FYI!! Someone look at their tech manual and see if you can figure out what I am talking about. Maybe they are crazy!! The Ford reps that is!!
I have some first hand knowlede.
the suspended mass is a tsb fix for the truck NVH (noise , vibration, harshness) this is one of the three vibration issues on the truck, not steering nibble, or driveshaft vibration, but the harshness that is driving many people crazy (including me)
it can be added to trucks if you complain and go through the whole process of determining your vibration is not one of the others mentioned,,,,,,, but it may be standard on all new trucks being built now.......
I was discussing a product with Curt Manufacturing, maker of very high quality truck hitches and passed on the part number of the mass damper to them. they were redesiging a hitch for the f150 that would not interfere with this damper. and needed one to mount on their mockup truck to finish the design. if I find out if they have a new hitch design complete, I will pass this info on.
hope this helps
