Help! Screw rear door problem

I have an 04 Screw. When I drive the auto lock engages as it should. Then after stopping and parking the rear passengers cannot exit without a front passenger depressing the door unlock button. And no, my child locks are not engaged. This seems to be a safety issue as if the vehicle was envolved in an accident and the front passenger were unable to unlock the doors, it seems crazy that the rear passenger would have to reach forward and unlock the doors. And I dont wish to deactivate the auto lock feature as I believe this to be a good safety feature when my wife is driving. So to other Screw owners are all trucks 04 and 05 this way?

I was told by my dealer that they are designed like that. What the point of having the child safety lock there i don't know but either way it doesn't do anything. Come spring time I will be removing my door panel and seeing what goes on inside there.

That's how our '05 SuperCrew works as well. I think that the front doors allow you to exit even if the door is locked, but the rears don't. Maybe to keep the kiddies in the vehicle?

I'm considering disableing the autolock. We don't have kids, and since it doesn't prevent the front seat occupents from opening the doors, why bother?

tsb's ref prob?

While doing some research ref this problem I came across mention of TSB's # 03204 and 17161. They are only titled as "rear door inoperable". Maybe someone has access to get more info ref these TSB's to see if they may help our problem. And btw I have been to my dealer and got the same "thats the way the doors work" answer.

My '05 did this also........until I had an alarm system put in and now they all unlock when I park.

So in my mind it must be a simple thing to alter or bypass.

If you were incapacitated in some way and couldn't unlock the doors, they could still just pull up on the lock button. On mine at least, the rears don't completely recess into the housing like the fronts do.

Believe me. my 4 boys already figured this one out-therefore, child lock set!

I was researching this a long time ago for my 04...

What i found...

None of the doors will unlock with the autolock feature enabled. What happens is the front handles on the interior of the truck will force the lock up when pulled from the inside.

The rear doors will not pull up the lock.

Try it sometime.... lock the doors, then pull the handle on a front door... the lock will pop up then.
If you pull the interior handle in the rear, it will not pop the lock up.

Autolock seems to be... like the name says... auto lock, and not auto unlock.

Don

My dealer said the same and they can't override a safety feature.

Keep us posted CFahner

Hey 04blkxlt, at least you didn't get a couple of wise guys who can't read a post telling you to "read the manual" I've had to get used to pushing the unlock button

I hated the autolock 'feature' on my truck. Instead of locking when you put the vehicle in drive (like the old Caddy my father used to have), the autolock didn't trigger until the second time you used the brake after taking off. It just seemed very disconcerting having the door locks trigger a block from my house. I am just glad that I was able to disable this very irritating feature, otherwise it would have been enough reason to sell the truck. I've been locking and unlocking my own doors for 25 years now, and I'm not willing to give up that particular decision-making process just yet.
