Window Rattle
Window Rattle
sorry guys. i know there is tons of posts on this but i dont have time to search. i have a sliding rear window and it sounds like styrafoam rubbing together. Can anyone give me a link to the tsb for this?I dont have the power sliding window just the manual one and its driving me nuts to listen to it.
I don't have a link to the TSB but if you tell your service dept that there's a TSB for this they can find it. I was a little concerned when my service advisor didn't know the TSB existed, however after I told him what it was about he found it no problem. The styrofoam squeaking sound is exactly what I had.
Thayer...did they do the entire TSB procedure on yours...and did it fix your sqeak?...Just wondering because mine is in there as we speak getting this addressed and I was just wondering how to fire back if they come back and tell me they can't find the squeak.
Madtrucker...I believe that is TSB 04-20-3 ...which supersedes TSB 04-02-6...sorry I don't have a link.

When I first took it in, they said they had to order the TSB kit and would get back with me. About a week later they called and said the kit was in and would be done by a local glass company. Since this is one of those mobile windshield replacement companies they sent them to my house to do the work. They took out the back seat and rear window and replace the outer channel around the window. So far, no squeaks.
There are several very informative threads about this issue but here is the most extensive one (I think) I hope this helps.

Thayer,
When Ford had your window fixed, was it covered under your 36/36,000 or were you expected to pay for the service? Since it is a TSB and not a recall I'm concerned that they will expect me to come up with the cash. I'm going in on Friday to have the aluminum backed Butyl pad removed and the window examined. It's driving me crazy.

It was a TSB and I didn't pay anything. I don't know how they billed it but I didn't really care either. Why are you concerned? Is you truck out of warranty?

No, not out of warrantee. I had a bad experience with Ford on my 1996 Cobra. A TSB was issued for a cooling system problem the 1996's were having. Since it was costly (New radiator, new dual speed fan, and new thermostat) it was not covered by the 36/36000. It was at the owners cost and at their discression. Once bitten twice shy.
So they shouldn't give me any problems???

Big relief. Thanks!
Has everyone gotten their letter from Ford about the Butyl pad yet? I spoke with my dealer and they informed me that they only have enough material to fix 8 trucks. You might want to get yours in ASAP.

Well,
I got the window fixed, the butyl pad removed and the PCM flashed today.
Here's the skinny:
1) the PCM flashed made a huge difference. I'm very pleased. My build date is 12/2003 so there's no doubt I had one of the oldest programs. Everything works fine except I didn't see an 'authorized modification' sticker that you guys talked about. What's up with that?
2) the butyl pad looks like they did a pretty good job. I'm happy with that job as well.
3) Now to the window. The good news is that the annoying sqeaking has gone away! YES!!! The bad news is that the window struggles to open and darn near stops when trying to close. It acts like there is TOO much pressure on it. Did your window do this? Is this something that will wear in? I guess the bottom line is that as long as it is still covered by my 36/36000 I have nothing to worry about right?
Let me know what your experiences are.

I had some of the same things addressed on mine...got her back today.
1) I didn't have the PCM reflashed because I don't really know if mine is all that slugish. I just don't notice much hesitation. So...you really noticed a difference?? Mine was built 8/2003. I was going to address this, but decided to wait.
Instead I had my front rotors replaced due to a shudder when braking. TSB 04-15-01
2) I also had the butyl pad removed and the coating applied to the inside box panel. Looks fine.
3) I have the dreaded squeak coming from the back too. This was my number 1 thing that I wanted fixed ...and they came up with nothing. They could not pin point a noise on the test. I mentioned the TSB # and the two different methods mentioned in the TSB to fix the problem. They said they had to first hear the noise before they could replace anything. go figure. The evil squeak surfaced on the drive home again. Talked with the service mgr. when I got home and I have to go back again. ARGGGhh.

From my experience with these guys (the dealer) they were very aware of the fact that F150's were having problems with the rear window. He never asked a single question, he just replaced the seal. No big deal. My advice, find another dealer and tell them that you want it fixed.
As far as the re-flash, if I were to quantify it.. I'd say that my throttle response increased about 60%. Of course some of that may have to do with my 'expectations' but there is no doubt that in park or neutral, when punching it, the throttle actually responds now. Before, I could punch it quickly, and the revs would only increase about 500 rpm. quite sad really.
Go get your window fixed.

Ok here is my 2cents. I got my truck back 2 weeks ago (`04 Screw FX4) for the 4th time for the rear slider squeak. This past w/e it started again but worse than before. THe Ford Field Rep that handled this the last time pointed out the problem was the trim/molding around the outside of the w/do. He pushed in key areas (the for corners) and there was the squeak. Besides the TSB and more Butyl the put washers on the studs of the w/do in order to "tighten" the gap between the w/do assy and trim. So knowing the affected areas in the corners, I took some velcro (just the fuzzy side) doubled it for the bottom corners and tripled for the top corners, slid it between the trim & sheetmetal with a small flathead. Amazing, it doesn't squeak anymore. I believe the problem is there is not thick enough material in those areas to cushion the vibration. Anywho, that was my fix and so far so good.
Give me your feedback if you like or any ?? as I am becoming an expert on this stupid w/do issue.
