Question Any preferances for Electric Brake Controllers

Does anyone have a preferance for an Electric Brake Controll? I have a 05 4x4 Screw with the trailer towing package that I'm going to be pulling a 18' trailer with that has one brake on the rear axle. Total weight of trailer loaded will be around 6000 pounds
Thanks in advance for any information.

David

The Tekonsha Prodigy is the hands-down favorite. It has an electronic accelerometer which provides proportional braking and it does not require "leveling" to calibrate it. You can do a search for Prodigy on this site and get a ton of good information and places to purchase. Hope this helps.

100% agreed. I have one in my 04 and towed 150 miles yesterday to pick up my project off-road ranger from a friends place. Properly adjusted the prodigy and the truck stoped like the trailer was not even there.

Heres some pics. They also show why I will NOT be installing a leveling kit on this truck now.

Nico,

I'd say intall the leveling kit and get the Firestone Airbags for the rear when towing heavy loads. You'll get a lot better performance from the truck while towing if you're rear suspension isn't riding on the factory bumpstops.

Where did you guy's get the Tekonsha Prodigy? Also, I know I can search for the answer to this question...but, where exactly is the plug for the brake controller connection behind the dash?

Thanks,

Sackett

Sackett,

I found the Tekonsha Prodigy at http://www.rjays.com. They were about $20.00 cheaper than the other places I looked. I think the plug for the brake controller is just to the right of the steering column under the dash.

Where do you guys have it mounted? I pulled my Prodigy out of my '99 f-150 before I traded it in. I've been trying to decide and the best I can come up with is in that little compartment under my cup holder/ashtray. I have the XLT, so there is no center console.

Thanks....

Mounted my Prodigy as shown, there is a metal bracket to attatch to by the park brake release and you wont hit your leg on it getting in and out:

I see many of you guys like the Prodigy controller. The Brakesmart controller looks to be more advanced in its stopping/adjusting capabilities. I just ordered a 8.5'x16' toy hauler yesterday, and I want to get the safest unit, so can anyone educate me on the safety benefits of either one? Prodigy looks cheaper, but I really like the self adjusting capabilities you find on the 2005 F250's, which Brakesmart seems to incorporate.

Thanks.

I put mine in he same place. I couldn't figure out any other reason the metal bracket was there. Got mine at Rvwholesalers.com

I do believe so. Look under the dash, up by the brake pedal. A little up and to the left of the brake pedal. You'll see a plug with nothing plugged into it. Your dealer should have given you (maybe already in your glove compartment) a harness that plugs into this with loose wires on the other end to connect to the controller you buy.
