Scared of Re-Paint

Hello everyone,

I found a couple of bad places in my paint on me new 05 Dk.Stone Metallic. Now, i must say I am pretty **** about paint, I like it to shine and be perty. Plus, everyone is aware of the cost on the trucks.

Here's my Dilemma,

The issue with the paint is not huge, it is a space probably 9" x 9" on the drivers side cab. It looks like air bubbles were trapped in the paint them burst and then clear coated over. SO, it is still shinny , but just isn't right. It is hard to notice but like everyone little things like this drive me batty. I have also found extensive bubble problems in the drivers door jam along with what apears to be dirt in the paint, again in the door jam area. I took it to the stealership and they use an offsite body shop. No biggy. I took it to the guy and he said yes lets clean it up and check the whole thing over and fix the paint. WELL, I have a huge fear of paint repairs. I have had two vehicles paint repaired and they both wound up being bad in my eyes. I am scared to death that someone is going to paint my 42k truck and it will look like it has been repaired.

Sorry, for the length and ramble but this is REALLY bothering me. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

-Will

I've got a similar complaint. I have a couple defects along the edge of the drivers side door, and a defect on the lower right corner of the tailgate that really bug me, but I'm not sure I want to risk having it come out worse than it is now.

I had a small paint defect on the hood of my 04 Scab. My dealer has an on-site body shop and they did a jam up job repainting the hood. You could not tell it had been repainted at all.

If it's gonna bug the snot out of you every time you see the imperfections, then just go for and let em fix it.

I guess it depends on how bad these spots really are. I can understand how you feel about it being in the back of your mind. My truck has a couple paint chips already and it bothers me. You would never be able to see them, unless you were looking it over really good, but I know they are there and it bothers me.

If the "bad places" are indeed "hard to notice", I think I would leave it alone. The Body Shop's screw ups may be worse than what you have already. I too, have seen some pretty bad repair work from paint shops.

If it is something that may lead to bigger paint problems down the road then I would definitely have them fix it. If it is simply a cosmetic thing, and it is hard to see from say...5-10' from the truck, I would leave it alone.

The fact of the matter is, these trucks aren't gonna be perfect. I could go over anybody's new truck and find something that is not perfect.

Does it look like a blob of melted steel on the edge of the door?

You have to weigh your analness and the damage. Personally, I'd get it fixed. Nothing irritates me more than looking at damage when I clean the truck. 99.9% of it could look great, but that one little blemish makes me think, "It's not perfect."

I had a bad experience w/ my '98 Explorer. The dealer had a teeny tiny dent to repair on the roof, just above the windshield. Couldn't have been more than a centimeter big. Instead they ruined half the roof trying to fix it. Scratched it up all the way back to the moonroof. Put the clearcoat on before the paint dried. Gave it back to me before the clearcoat dried.

I had them do it again. It was better, but not perfect. But that time I didn't take it back because I didn't trust them to do any better of a job. And it was on the roof that I couldn't see.

If it was on the side or hood, it would have gone back.

My brother does the paint work for my local dealership but he replaced a body shop that did less than perfect work. He got the job by correcting the other shops mess. Go to the body shop and see what kind of work they do and check with some of their customers to see see how satisfied they are. The dealership can point you to some previous work they had done there and you can see if it is good work or not.

Yep, that's basically what it looks like.

Quality of the work is the dilemma. If you could be assured of perfection, you would be comfortably with the re-paint. You’re going to have to go to your dealers paint shop and see for yourself what the can do. The fact of the matter is some body shops got it going on and some stink.

It's all about the research! Bad shops get bad reps. Ask around, walk their body shop lot. Look at cars supposedly ready for pick-up by customers.

I have some very minor issues with mine and have been weighing whether to get them fixed as well.

Good Luck! Let us know what you do!

Two weeks after I picked up my truck some tree hugger keyed it because he looked at it as a gas guzzler. He keyed the length of the passenger side door, supercab door, and passenger side bed. Obviously I had to get it repaired and was a nervous wreck. The shop took much longer to complete the job than I expected but did nice work. They had to take all three parts down to bare metal, re-primer, re-paint, and re-clear. Now I can't even tell it ever happened. If the blemish really bothers you, I say have it fixed. If you are not happy with the work when it is done, tell them to fix it again. Don't pay them (whoever is picking up the tab) until you are happy.

I agree. If it's gonna bother ya, do it. If it were me, I wouldn't let the dealer do it(or their shop). The next time I need body work(hopefully never) I'm taking it to a local shop by me that is part of a world wide guaranteed paint system. I don't recall the name of the system(believe it's German), but if there is EVER any problem w/ paint/bodywork, you can take it to any shop w/ this system.
