Question 30K maintenance

Hey guys,

I believe, as I know some of you do, in doing as much of my own maintenence that I can. I checked the "recommended maintence schedule" that came with our trucks and it looks like its time for the tranny fluid and fuel filter to be changed (among other things).

Has anyone done this yet?
I have not got a shop manual and the owners manual does not mention the fuel filter. Where is it located?

BTW, I usually do fuel filters myself and used to do tranny fluid changes on my old ranger but realized I couldn't replace or flush all the fluid from torque converter and such. I got a coupon in the mail for a $99 tranny fluid flush (regular price ~$140) from the dealer that I got my truck from which is about an hour away. The closest dealer is about 5 minutes away, but they say they can't honor the coupon. I might just have the fuel filter replaced by the dealer when they do the tranny fluid change.

Zoltan, Where did you get the dual exaust pipes?

Was Capital Ford the dealer that wouldn't honor the coupon?

THANKS, MH

I dont know how to do it but I remember some guys talking about the fuel filter being real easy to change. It is located on the inside of the frame, just about under the drivers side door. It also has some easy connector thing that makes it easier to replace.

No, it doesn't. You still need a removal tool for both ends. jpdadeo had a good post describing his replacement procedure.

You may also want to replace your cabin air filter (where ever that is).

MH, I got it off ebay from socalmotorsports. I think it was about $550.

Yeah, it was Capital Ford that would not honor the coupon. They said there was no way they could. Actually, they sounded like it was hard to believe that Dunn Benson would do it for so cheap. I got the truck from Dunn-Benson which is about an hour away from me.

Well, since one has to have a "special tool" (DAMN I HATE SPECIAL TOOLS), is it covered under warrenty? O r do I have to buy this "special removal tool"?

Many auto parts stores (like Auto Zone) have specialty loaner tools available and they do not charge you to borrow these tools. I would check with your local auto parts store before buying a tool you might use a handful of times over the life of the truck.

My dealer's service dept. told me there wasn't a cabin filter in these trucks when I asked about it. Are they full of bunk or what?
.............Don't tell me it's just on the Lariat.

My service manual says it does, and I just got a coupon book from my delear for a 'cabin air filter replacement' for $39 buck... sounds like your dealer if full of bunk!

EDIT: Then again, with the FX3½ I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't bother with filters of any kind..

Yeah, I seriously doubt any filter would be under warranty. The dealer quoted me a price of I think $40 part and labor.

I'm not sure about the cabin filter. Looks like I need to pick up a real service manual.

I think I will just pick up one of those disconnect tool sets from sears, it's only $10 and has the potential for other uses.

No, that's Carolina Beach down near Wilmington. Although I have been out to the outer banks a few times with my truck. I will be going out again for Labor Day. I usually go out on the north end where the road ends. Lots more driving room!
