Thinking about buying a toolbox for my truck and would like to hear your recommendations, good or bad. Thanks.

Think about narrowing your search...

What are your needs/preferences? Chrome or powdercoated or painted... high profile or low profile... gull wing or full lid... plastic or steel... cheap or not cheap... rail or no rail... drilled mounting or J-hooks... More choices than some would anticipate...

Well, what type of FX4 are you ... SCab or SCrew? You're a little more limited with a SCrew due to the wheels being so close to the wall of the bed (back window).

I didn't want anything above the rails, so I went with a CHEST style box ... the cheapest I could find just to hold my stuff. Tractor Supply Company was my best option with a Dee Zee. But, you can also go with a LOW PROFILE, a CROSSOVER (single versus double lid), etc. There are quite a few styles from which to choose. I guess it might be best to narrow it down to which style you want before figuring out which manufacturer. Color may also be a requirement for you. Chrome/Aluminum is everywhere, but black is a little harder to find. Some are sturdier, some have better locks, some have storage bins and nets inside, etc. Good luck!

diamondplate aluminum, single full lid (not the 'gull wing' style), deep enough to hold your stuff but shallow enough to be able to slide lumber underneath.
Also, most manufacturers have 2-3 quality levels. The cheapest are also the thinnest, lightest duty. Get the heavier box and I prefer the push button style locks because there is no good way to jimmy them when they are locked (not without ripping the toolbox apart). Make sure the box lid is sturdy enough to stand on, it's real handy when washing the roof of the cab.

AVOID THE PLASTIC TOOLBOXES because they are cheap crap and will warp and fade in a couple years. An aluminum box will always be worth at least a hundred bucks regardless.

http://www.uwsta.com/ this is the way to go. I have had many toolboxes and so has my dad and we dont buy anything but these now. ( Hes in construction so they are put to the real test) Plus as far as i know they are the only company that specificaly makes a toolbox for our model of truck. all the others are close but they are not exact. They have diamond plate and black. Single lids open up to 90 degrees so you can really get in them. Mine for my truck is coming intomorrow. Will post picks after the install.

Your box looks good Gordo...I like that. Is that bolted down to the bed or what? How do you like the latches for opening and closing it. I have an RDS side mount type on my trailor and I'm not to pleased with how the latches operate. You have to close one side and then reach over and press down on the other side. I'm thinking about getting one for my truck too and was just wondering how you like yours down inside the bed? Can you remove it pretty easy if you want to take it out?...Thanks.

I went with the UWS black diamondplate single lid style. It's the shallow one that still allows me to use the full length of the bed below the truck box, which does come in handy when hauling landscape timbers. Pictures are in my gallery.

“Grip Rite No Drill Mounting System” - $18.96

Got it at Lowe’s and they were also available in polished aluminum.

texaspyro21,

Where did you get the UWS toolbox and how much? Comparing it to "jpdadeo" and his box from Lowe's for around $180. Thanx.

Good Point. My needs...Just an additional storage type space, so I can keep the cab uncluttered. I have a Supercab. As far as price goes....I would rather pay for quality. I also do not want something that sits so high that I can't see out my back window.
I do not want to drill into my truck if I don't have to.

I really like the looks a the box that jpdadeo has!

Thanks for all the replies!

I have the same toolbox as jpdadeo. I got mine from TSC, and it was about $125.00.

Piece of cake. I used the “Grip Rite No Drill Mounting System” which worked excellent. They are made of heavy-duty nylon polymer; the best mounting system I’ve seen so far.
Took about 20 min tops.
