Black module next to mirror

Does anyone know what the black module is to the right of the rear view mirror stem? It has electrical wires from the headliner going to it. THANKS, MH

So how hard is it to remove so that I could put a little strip of window tint on and then put it back on?

That's the module for the auto dimming mirror that you can get (or already have).

I second the auto-dimmer answer. I had a '97 T-Bird that had the same type of unit.

If you attempt to remove it, secret service and FBI will bust down your door in minutes

Xtremeview...if your dealer was unaware that the mirror module is a compass, he must be related to my dealer where a sales person told me that the "04 model F150s don't have rear end ratios...they discontinued that feature with the previous model."

oh, btw, don't push the button on the little black box!! It is an auto-destruct mechanism! Push it for a 10 sec auto-destruct, or hold it a few seconds for instant auto-destruct.

IT IS NOT THE AUTO DIMMER. The auto dimmer sensor is next to the buttons on the mirror. Geez, no one reads their owner's manual?!

I know from experience it is the compass module.
The dealer broke mine while replacing the rear-view mirror and they had to order a new one. While waiting for the new one I had 2 little dashes displaying in place of the compass directions on my led. It's a good thing I was driving in familiar territory or I may have become lost.
