anyone had a 50 series Flowmaster muffler installed on their new f150 5.4?
i want it to have more of a rumble, but i don't really want a drone in the cab. anyone have anything to contribute. supposed to have it installed tomorrow.

i have a 50 series FM and i love it. i bought the cat back kit beg. of jan, and it sounds great. it has dual exit out the rear bumper. at cruising it has a nice low rumble that is barely noticable inside, but once you get on it a little, it roars! I think you are gonna be very happy with that muffler. let me know how you like it after you get it installed.

Isn't the fifty series actually quieter than the 40 series?

On a side note I was always under the impression that flowmasters, ironically enough, aren't very free flowing.

well, I have the 40 series and it definatly reminds you that there is a v8 under the hood........

but I only really hear it when I step on it, since it is a SIDO the back.......

Beef...you're technically correct. Flowmasters are 'baffled' mufflers while, to make a comparison, Magnaflows are 'straight-through'.

I have read some very interesting tech. papers (SAE, etc.) on the engineering/flow dynamics of baffled vs. straight-through, e.g. re: torque/HP, it is not necessary to have ANY tailpipe aft of a straight-through while tailpipe length and diameter are critical to performance with a baffled muffler (too complicated of a subject to explain further here...sorry to have introduced the subject in such simplistic terms).

SO Flowmasters hurt performance unless they are set up with a specific length of tubing?

I am surprised Flowmaster doesn't have any cat back kits for our trucks yet.

Beef...not only length of exit pipes, but diameter is a factor also. Again being simplistic (perhaps too simplistic), let's just say that you can place a straight-through anywhere in the exhaust system, even at the very end with no tailpipe at all, and performance will not be affected. You can't say the same with a baffled muffler. It all has to do with exhaust gas wavelengths...a straight-through just acts as another piece of exhaust/tail pipe no matter the location, while the baffled muffler location really messes with flow dynamics.

I feel really stupid asking this, but my interpretation on SI/DO is single in, Dual out. Is that right? Now, does this mean it will be dual exhaust in front of the tire, behind the tire, out the back, etc?

Beef...SIDO applies to the muffler configuration only, not the location of the exit pipes. The pipe locations use different terminology, eg. dual side exit, single side exit, split rear dual exit, etc. etc. Yes, it can get very confusing...don't forget ahead of or behind rear wheel exits (dual or single).

i just had it installed. just the muffler #942453 i think. i've only driven it about a mile so far. seems to be no difference other than the sound. it's just what i was looking for. good V8 sound, no interior drone. $137.00. took about 30 minutes.

jamzwayne, i went to the flowmaster site to see if they had any sound clips from a V6. i didn't find any. i can imagine that it sound pretty good, but i really don't know that from experience. i'm sure someone on here has installed a flowmaster on a V6. maybe they will post soon.
