wait 20 seconds or so and let you engine idle back down to normal after you start it up cold. Then you shouldn't get that noise.

I only notice it too when I start it up and immediately put it gear and drive off. My 4.0L V6 Sport Trac would do the same thing if you start off too quick.

My fan NEVER shuts off! It's always going, no matter if it's -20 out! I don't get it?

Ford trucks use an engine driven fan with a temperture operated mechanical clutch to activate it when air flow is needed through the radiator. The clutch has a fluid or some other medium in it that starts to lock up the fan when the temperature rises and lets it freewheel when its not needed. I've read that if the fan is locked or starting to lock up when you shut the engine off, it will remain locked for 30 seconds or so after the engine has cooled off and restarted. Revving the engine will make it release too.

I guess this makes sense because mine doesn't do it every time. My 97 F-150 did it and I hear my neighbor's old Explorer doing it sometimes too.
