Rock Chips
Rock Chips
Is there anyone out there getting rock chips on there Super Crew's? I have a 2004 Lariat Super Crew with Husky mudgaurds and Westin step bars. I only have 4800 miles on the truck. I do not do alot of gravel roads but I do some. I would guess between 50 to 100 miles has been gravel roads. The front of the box near the cab is getting pounded by rocks. It looks like to me the front tires are picking them up and either hitting the bottom of the cab and missing the cab and the step bars and hitting the corner of the box. I talked to the dealer the other day and they havn't seen that yet. He said he was going to make a couple of calls but I haven't checked back with him.
Please review my photo gallery under Rock Chips and check it out.

3M makes a stone shield film (not sure what it's called). I've heard mixed reviews on it. Mother's also has a stone chip repair kit, it is suppose to blend in the paint, so it doesn't "glob". I've only seen it on their web-site, so I don't know how it works. Hopefully the dealer will come through for ya.
Well I talked to my dealer today again today. We have somewhat decided that my problem is more in the way the Westin bars are set up. Since the way these bars are designed is they are only conected to the front and the rear most other bars have at least some gussets in between. If these did have the gussets I think that would help. But what do I do with the bars I have? Talking with the owner of the dealership also he suggested to go talk to the line-x people to see if they would be able to help. Also the parts guy there that I bought the bars from was going to make a call to Westin to see if they had anything to say. I'll keep you informed.

The super duty's have the same film from factory under the rear portion of the box.
I have the factory steps and I have no issues with chips in that area.
What did you want the ford people to do? fix the rock chips? What do you want the westin people to do? redesign their step bars? give you a refund? repair the damage from the chips?
I just find it ridiculous the amount of people around here who want to blame any little thing that happens with the truck on something/anything.
It is a truck they will get rusty underneath. The bed bolts may develop surface rust. The drive shaft will rust. The seats will rattle over big bumps. When you drive over gravel gravel will be picked up by the tires and flung toward the undercarriage or rocker panels.
When I drive down the road and a rock flies up and cracks the windshield I'm going to the ford dealer and as them why they didn't design the truck a little better.

Thanks, blitzkrieg. It just dosent seem right to have less than 5,000 miles on a $39,000 truck. My 99 and 02 SuperCab came with the factory bars and I had no problems after 50,000 miles. I would think there is people out there that do not have mud gaurds or bars that there truck would have to be beat up worse then mine. I just wanted to now if I'm the only one with this.

Bummer on the chips man. Those are definately beyond repair for an average garage warrior. If it was a onesy or twosy on the front end, I could get you through fixing them to the point that you'd never ever notice them but, those are a different beast.
Best of luck coming up with an option for future prevention. As has been mentioned, I believe the 3M film is supposed to be awesome stuff! I'd certainly entertain that option if I were you...

Yes it is on both sides. Last pic is passenger side. What do you think of putting some line-x on that corner and underneth the cab or do you think the 3M film would hold up? I think they can add color so it might not be real noticable. I'm going to go see the line-x guy tomorrow.
