I am thinking about buying the ford remote start unit on ebay and have it privately installed in order to avoid the high cost from the dealer. But, if any warranty issues should arise would Ford warranty it since they didn't install it?

 

I ended up having Sandog53 install mine for me. He's in Kansas City. Don't know how for that is away from you, but he did an excellent job, did it quick, and cheaper than anyone around here I found for installs.
Don't know about the warranty. If they ask, just say that you had someone else do it (like Circuit City or something).

 

Ford will only warranty their parts and/or those which they install. This alarm will not be under your warranty if you have someone other than the dealership add it. And something goes wrong and the alarm screws up something else on your truck, then Ford won't cover that either.

 

I've never had an alarm or remote start on any of my vehicles before, what kind of problems could the alarm cause?

 

I work for a Ford Authorized Distributor and am certified to install these. If you tell them that my company did it they will have to honor the warranty. It will not cause any problems with the truck, but if the remote start quits for some reason, then it is under warranty and the dealer will fix them.
