Could/Would/Does this rubbing of the bushing also cause a vibrating sensation in the wheel when turning at various times? I've had that issue for a long time that the dealer could never seem to fix. They verified the clicking sound, but couldn't handle the intermittent turning vibration.

I printed out The TSB for my steering ticking/clicking problem for the dealer(s). They told me there's three TSB's for steering problems with the 2005 and couldn't do a fix because they couldn't hear the problem. Are they deaf or do I have supersonic hearing? I even pointed out those two bushings and asked them to grease them up....WD-40 takes the ticking away but only for a day or two....then it's back. Two dealers now with no luck. Looks like I'm stuck with it unless I can fix it myself. I wonder how the dealer would grease it?

I'm not an engineer but wouldn't a nylon bushing do the trick

Oh WOW, this is an old thread. Gosh I remember this too, though I didn't ever remember InBred responding. Thanks InBred I'm sorry for what appeared as me being impatient!

Well I had the TSB performed on this while the truck's suspension was being rebuilt from the accident. I drove the truck for a day or two and now it's back in with some paint issues.

The TSB appears to have fixed it, though I'm getting the slightest hint of a rattle sound. I'll take a look when I get it back and see if it's the bushing. The dealership had to replace some "steering rod" that was slightly loose; is what I was told.

Under column rattle FIXED!

Hey guys,

I'm sure some of us have different rattles from different places but I just want to drop a note here.

Today, instead of my usual laying on my back and banging around to find the rattle, I took off the kick panel right under the steering column - the rectangular piece. Well guess what?? Under that trim panel there is a metal plate that is secured to a metal chassis (dash chassis?) Anyway, 2 out of the 4 screws/washers were loose!!! I finally found the culprit!!!! Took it for a ride and QUIET over bumps, warm interior or cold!! WOOT WOOT!

Take a look here if you haven't already!

Thanks

Thanks!

All I got to say is thank god for this forum. I ripped my steering column apart 6 times trying to figure out this dumb *** rattle. Makes a $30k truck seem like a volkswagon with a rattle like that!

Thanks to whoever figured this out.

Wow I cannot believe this many people are having this same problem. I thought I was just going crazy hearing this rattle in mine.

I have had the clicking noise coming from the steering column ever since I have had my 2005 XLT Supercab Flareside. It only happens when I make turns or go over bumpy road surfaces.

Can someone list the 3 TSB's for the steering column noise for me please?

Glad I found this thread.

Will call the dealer next week on this one.

Been hearing a clicking over bumps and during steering. I've had the steering column torn down twice, every plastic panel under the driver's side torn off, and still couldn't find the problem...until I found this forum. Slid the bushing back toward the steering wheel and BINGO!!! Thanks guys for your posts. This rattle thing was driving me insane. Anyone figure out a way to keep the bushing from sliding back down the steering shaft?

Amazing

Wow, I've been putting up with this annoying noise coming from the steering column forever now in my 2005 F150. I found this thread and spun/pushed the bushing back up towards the steering wheel and the noise is gone! Thanks for the informative post and saving me from selling my truck!

Damn, a 2007? Are you serious that Ford hasn't fixed this simple problem in all these years? You would think a car company would fix issues like this during subsequent model years instead of making it exactly the same and incurring the wrath of so many drivers.

That seems insane to me, that someone with an '07 has to look at an old thread from 2004 to fix a problem.

Come on, Ford... you've got to start with some quality or people will continue to buy more foreign vehicles every year. My 2004 has so many rattles I've given up, and I treat mine extremely well. I don't want to EVER see more Nissan Titanic's or Toy Tundra's on the road than F-150's. Quality is Job #1? Hello...? Who's smokin' crack on the quality assurance line?

Now I'm back looking for a more permanent fix. It just keeps coming back. It seems the colder the weather the faster it comes back.

However, now I'm beyond 36,000 so I'm on my own. Between this and the rattle in the rear window it's driving me nuts. I just wish I could get my hands on the felt the TSB for the back window references.
