i have a permit for the lights and as far as obeying traffic laws, we stop for stop signs and red lights just like you do when your in the big red truck...but if you want me to do the speed limit, wait for the red light and do a full stop at an empty intersection while your house is on fire...then your a dumbass

 

I honestly think this is the case for most volunteers. A Rolling stop at most. The police understand...especially if you have the fire logo on your plates, or perhaps a permit for red lights on your vehicle.

I am in the process of getting a permit for red lights, i think they would come in handy, and folks would get out of the road a bit faster for you.

We are, however, restricted to two red lights, that can't be anymore than 3" in diameter on the front of your vehicle.

I think that would suffice, and do wonders for us "in a hurry".

I'm off to get the front strobes installed now. Got the rears done, the wig wags in the front done, however, still have yet to do the tail light flashers.

Hope the rest of the install goes as easy as the first part.

 

OK, who here thinks that a local policeman will write a ticket to a VOLUNTEER fireman responding with lights and sirens to an emergency call within their own community? That is unless they are driving like a dumbass as well.

 

DrPaul84, What 6 locations did you place your strobes?

Tail Lights, Reverse Lights, and Fog Lights?

Do you by chance have up close pictures of your tail lights to see the strobe lights in there? Your fogs also?

Man, those fogs and housings are a PITA to remove! But, i got 'er dun.

Just want to check placement before i drill those holes! (ok, i have tail lights drilled...but am wondering if i should place them in the tail lights, or reverse lights?)

I was thinking Headlights, Fog Lights and Tail Lights...but now after i have them in my tail lights, i am thinking they would be much brighter if i were to have placed them in the reverse light location...

Thoughts?

MN. also states only 2 red ones ,4 inch max on the front. Other then the"look at me i`m kewl" factor thats about the only reason most "volunteers" have them. They dont let you break any law what so ever in most states. And alot of states its illegal to even have them. New jersey as the original poster is from, allows more leway in there law. You stop at a red light and you sit there just like everyone else till it turns green with them flashing elsewhere. I know at least 5 different "volunteers" from 2 states around here, All with illegal setups and iv`e seen most of them abuse the use of them. Wisconsin just arrested a volunteer fireman cause he thought it was neat to pull people over and give them driving warnings if he thought they were driving bad. If your house was burning down, they are going to get there at the same time anyway following the law. If there going to break the law, and drive though red stop lights, it dont matter if you got them on or not. You will be sued if you kill someone doing it on the way to the firehouse. And yes, I help out the deputy here, and dont have "lights" on my personal truck that I use to get there.

Heres Mn law papawoodie since your from Mn also, and yep the front reds cant even flash, and you need a permit from the state to even put the two "tail lights" as I would call them on front:

MS 169.58, Subd. 2 allows red lamps on some vehicles. It says,in part -"Upon obtaining a permit from the commissioner of public safety, any motor vehicles operated by an active member of a volunteer fire department authorized by...any township in this state...may be equipped with a lamp emitting a red light to the front of such vehicle. Such lamp shall be lighted only when the member...is responding to an emergency call in connection with duties as a volunteer firefighter...."
MS 169.64, Subd. 3 says, "Flashing lights are prohibited, except on an authorized emergency vehicle, school bus, etc." Vehicles of volunteer fire departments that are authorized a red light in MS 169.58, Subd 2 appear to be prohibited from having "flashing lights".
MS 169.64, Subd. 4 (a - d) allows blue lights only on road maintenance equipment, snow removal equipment, authorized emergency vehicles, and in a motorcycle's rear brake light.
