Angry "Rotten Eggs" Smell

I got my new '04 F-150 (FX4, 5.4L, ext-Cab) back in late Sept and since then the exhaust smelled horrible. I was told "its new, it has to burn the crap from the factory off". So, 4 months and 5,000 miles later it still smells like sulfur. When I get out of the truck the smell just hits me. When I have friends riding along and they open the passenger-side doors the cab smells awful.

I am taking it in for service tomorrow (because the rear sliding window also leaks ).

Anything I should make sure they do tomorrow?

I took it in for service a month ago for this problem and said that they updated my ECM program because the old ECM's had a problem with a sulfur smell but that hasn't done anything.

If anyone else has had this problem what was the cause?

Thanks!

I'd find a different brand of gas if I were you.

Sounds like a bad Catalytic converter. When they go bad, they tend to put off a sulfer smell.

Have you dealer look into the Catalytic converters to make sure they're working right.

On second thought, I would imagine the Check Engine Light would come on if they were bad.

I have used different brands of gas and they all end up smelling roughly the same.

The dealership told me to avoid Exxon because of the high-sulfur content and I have choosen other brands (5 or 6) and it doesn't help.

Its irriataing because everyone else (seemingly) can put whatever type of gas in their car/truck/SUV and it doesn't smell like this.

Its not the brand of gas you are using. Something is wrong with your truck.

Or, you ran over a skunk and its stuck in your fender.

I have a "burning" smell that comes from the vicinity of the right rear tire when I park the truck in my garage sometimes. I can't figure out where it is coming from though. I have 4000 miles on mine.

freekyFX4,

Please remove the large picture of your truck in your sig because it is making me sick !

Man, I wish I'd gotten that color.
That is one beautiful truck.
To make matters worse, I look and look for one locally and dont see one.

I would be the only one.

Mine as well, it's been discussed on here before and the consensus is that it is normal and there is nothing that can be done about it. I agree though, it is very annoying.

You guys are crazy. There is no way its normal. 99% of the vehicles on the road dont emmit sulfur smells. Plus, its new. Something is not right.

I agree... Sulfar smells like rotten eggs... Are we sure something didn't climb up on the exhaust system and die???

A lady at work had an 03 Chevy Tahoe that had the same problem. She took it the Chevy arbitration board and Chevy bought it back. Tahoe had gone in the shop about 12 times for the problem, and they could never find anything wrong.
I'd start the paperwork.

Thanks Mathwiz! For a second I thought you just didn't like the big picture...then I read the rest of your post. There are several of them running around here in Nashville...so I am not unique. I can't wait to get her lifted with 35"s. Then she will be unique.

I seem to remember back in the day when catalytic converters were new technology many if not most had that smell. It seems the technology has come a long way and all but eliminated the smell. I only speak from my own experience of owning a lot of new vehicles over the last 15 years, I'm not any kind of expert. It were me I would suspect a problem with the converter and take it to the dealer. Just my .02, good luck.
