Should You request a reflash w/ no problems
Should You request a reflash w/ no problems
I'm taking my 04 in for its first oil change. I have had zero problems so is wise to ask for a flash to the current software version or leave well enough alone.
Thanks

If everything works properly and you are satisfied, why would you want them to change the computer program? Kinda like asking them to patch the tire that doesn't leak or paint the fender that isn't scratched.
I asked them to flash mine for throttle lag, and they said it was "normal electronic throttle body". But, I also had a very occassional eratic idle for which they"updated PCM". I've had the truck back one day, and can't say if it's just in my head (time will tell) but I swear that response is right on.I don't know if what they did to mine is the same as a "re-flash" as I got no sticker under the hood.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. You'd be hard pressed to get a dealership to reflash your PCM when there's no specific complaint. Can't fix what isn't broke, and all.

Same reason I keep the firmware on my router, servers and PCs current. Improvements are made to improve speed and efficiency.
I didn't have it done but it would seem to me the current version of software would be an improvement over the initial release.
But Thanks for the opinions....
By the way I picked it and the service department scratched my driver door. They are now fixing on Monday. Figures....oil change leads to body shop visit. The good thing is they didn't even question it....

The dealership reflashed my truck for an intermittent starting problem. It still only starts 95% of the time in cold weather, and I now get a consistent 3 mpg less than I did in the first 20k miles (14.3 vs 17.3) prior to the reflash.

I don't look at this as a "if it ain't broke don't fix it" issue. We all paid good money for our trucks and want the truck to run the best it can. IMHO, PCM upgrades are done for two basic reasons: 1) to fix a known problem or 2) as an improvement. Even if I do not have an existing problem, I want the latest PCM code since Ford upgraded the PCM for some reason. I look at this as "preventive maintenance" and "customer satisfaction". Just my 15 cents (inflation you know). PCM upgrades should be part of normal maintenance.
