Is this just a case of buyer beware?

Hey everyone. I bought my 2004 XLT with 9000 km on it in October. Since it was "new to me", it didn't have a factory sticker in the window listing standard equipment and options. When my salesman was telling me about the truck, he mentioned that it had a 3.73 limited slip. This is one of the requirements I was looking for in a truck, so I didn't even have to bother asking him about it.

Well today I was out in the driveway drying off the inner door area after a wash and I thought I'd look at the sticker on the door jamb. It says H9 under the axle section!! That's a 3.55 LS. So now I'm pissed that either the little bastard lied to me or he simply didn't know and told me what he thought I wanted to hear.

What should I do? Suck it up? Demand they regear it? Or will I not really notice anyway when it comes to hauling or putting bigger tires on?

Well if it isnt in writing i think you will be S.O.L. The only thing you can do and go talk to the sales manager and see what if anything they can or will do for you.
Sorry to disapoint you.

I doubt he did it on purpose. Probably didn't know and someone told him it was the 3.73 rear. Don't forget he is a salesman.

Plus, you bought it used, do you have it in writing that it has a 3.73 rear?? You should of checked the code yourself before you did the deal.

Lastly, I don't think it will make that much difference, it's only .18 of a turn difference.

Lesson

ASSUME=="A$$" out of "U" and "ME"

Sleazeman screwed up. At least its a LS. Your screwed, don't worry about it. You were happy until you saw the sticker... so what's the big deal? 3.55/3.73 is THAT big of a deal... if you tow or do anything of the sort, you'd wanna regear to 4.10 or higher... so it's really a moot point, isn't it?

Demand they re-gear it ? That's a good one, i needed a laugh
too start my day, thanks. If you didn't make sure of all those little things before you bought it USED then, oh well. The only thing you should even be dealing with a dealer for is too aquire the
vehicle and get them to fix anything that might break while it's
under warranty, other then that you take it and mod it to your own specs ( tires - wheels - breathing things - tuners - stereos )
i know you know what i'm trying to say ... actually dzervit said it
already and i'm just venting off your " demand they re-gear it "
line .... PEACE !!!
oh and good luck with the new truck......

I believe it comes down to how much aggrevation are you willing to go through? You loved the truck before you discovered this, and the aggrevation of trying to fix this could be enough to make you start regretting your purchase.

I have the 3.55 LS in my XLT and I love it! You gain a little mileage over the 3.73's, and it will still handle 14,000 lbs payload and trailer. Most of us will never put that much weight on our trucks. If your putting on bigger wheels then you will want to regear it anyway, to get those bigger meats moving. It sucks you didn't get what you thought, but if your going to mod anyway then does it matter?

I don't think he got away with anything. He probably just didn't know the difference. I don't remember the details but I got into a disagreement over what the numbers on a tire (225/55/R16) mean.

....

He had no clue what they meant but swore he did.

Typically they know very little.

What "Salesmen" say.........anything.

If you notice salesmen say; yes, great, and absolutely a lot. They most of the time don't have a clue; he's probably got a different job by now.

I'm not one to defend sleazmen, but he could have been told by who ever - tech, boss, another sales clown that it was a 3.73. The guys got a thousand used cars on his lot - he screwed up on one tiny feature... would that have broken the deal? If he said "no, it has a 3.55 LS rear end" would you have responded "man, that blows chunks, I'll pass on this..." ? Prolly not.
