My FX4 Screw 25,000 mile Review

I Ordered my FX4 Screw in September of 03, It arrived the first of November. I had purposely ordered it with the 17" wheels knowing I was going to switch tires, and there weren't a lot of 18" options available. I installed the BFG Radial AT's in the 285 size. They fit perfectly and were a great choice.

Let's get the "Con's" out of the way:

At 18,000 miles the engine light came on. I took it in immediately because I was planning a trip. Apparently one of the Spark plug electronic Coil things went bad, causing a cylinder not to fire. They replaced it and no other engine problems.

Short list, huh. Other than oil changes this truck has been rock solid. I've been putting a lot of highway miles on it recently because of a job change and I can honestly say this truck is a Pleasure to drive on the highway.

Very Smooth, No vibrations at Any speed. Quiet.

It also handles very predictable in the twisties for such a large vehicle.

Engine: The engine did seem kind of laggy when I first bought it, but I found it was more the way you drive it. If you want to get on it and make it go, you just have to Quickly step on the gas (all the way). Otherwise it will short shift and make it "feel" not as peppy.

Power Braking at stop lights with my friends in the car or when next to my buddy in his Dodge are considered "fun" to me. And Smoke rolling off of 33" tires (both wheels of course because I opted for the limited slip) is very impressive.. Expensive, but impressive...

It has also loosened up with the additional miles and I've gained 2-3 mpg from new. This engine Pulls!

The best mod for me, other than the tires, was the Leer truck cap. I have a trailer, so hauling the dirt bike and other big things isn't a problem. I really enjoy the cargo space I now have, enabling me to carry the tool boxes, extra water, tow straps, etc that I like to have with me at all times, but didn't necessarily like to have in the cab with me.

With a wife, two kids, and a dog, this has become the family truckster as well for long trips. Other than the gas mileage, it's perfect for this. Plenty of room for the passengers, and Tons of room for our stuff.

I added the Yakima Roof rack as well to the cap. I have to stand on a 5 gallon bucket to get to it, but two or three mountain bikes take up a lot of space, and it is nice to have your gear in the back, seperate from your muddy bikes. Plus with the basket case I can throw a wet tent or whatever up there.

I honestly can't think of a better vehicle I could comfortabley carry 4 guys, all their mountain bikes, camping gear, and a dog into the deep woods that only a 4wd could get too. Yet not beat you up for the 200 highway miles you have to do.

Thanks, I really like the cap too. It's true, you don't see a lot of trucks with them ....

Nice looking truck you got there.

I guess Ill give my short 20,000 mile review. 2004 F-150 XL 4.6 reg cab 2wd.
Mostly highway miles loaded down with tires and the truck is great. Open diff 2wd sucks in snow, but the aggressive at tires helped some.

Truck is abused though. Boss hit the dumpster and scratched the left front when new. I was then backing it out and hit my ranger and scratched the other corner. Then one day we got a huge storm and the dumpster rolled into the bed leaving a HUGE dent and scratches.

Interior looks horrible also, someone spilled something one day.

This truck was leased, we decided to have the bodyshop fix it and were going to turn it in early and get a 05 4x4 xlt. Its next to impossible for me to drive my 4x4 to work and then try to drive a 2wd all day.

As for my 5.4L ext cab 4x4, just under 4000 miles with one major road trip already no issues. Had to flash the computer, since then its fine.
