Reflash or not????
Reflash or not????
I am looking for opinions on this. When I got my truck it had the noticeable almost quarter second delay on the throttle no matter what position it was in. Since, I have installed the Superchips tuner in my truck. This has gotten rid of the hesitation if I am on the throttle and depress it more. The only thing it did not get rid of is say I am driving along, and let of the throttle completely. When I got to get back onto the throttle, the hesitation is still there somewhat, but that is the only time it is there. If I am at quarter throttle and I push the throttle down, it is pretty instant. I am wondering if I should take the tuner off, have a reflash done, and then get the tuner updated? In my opinion I don't know if this is going to be worth it to send the tuner to get updated, cause it was one of the first batch out, so I know it is going to need to be updated. Any opinions on what I should do would be appreciated. (I think I am just going to leave it, but wanted opinions) Thanks. Also wanted to know if others are still experiencing a slight hesitation off idle but nowhere else post-tuner. Lemme know.

Check out this thread "Talk To Ford Engineer" by Supercrew04. There is some great news on throttle response given there. I don't know how it will work with a tuner. I'll let those with tuners answer that part of your question.
Hope this helps you out!

Thanks, I checked out that thread also. I am just thinking it may not be worth it to take the tuner out, get reflash, send tuner for update, put tuner back on. I don't know what to do here. Thanks for the info though.
My truck is going in tomorrow for an oil change. I've already talked to a SA and he agreed to also flash the PCM with the most recent release. I'll post any noticable differences, if there are any.
shifting is a characteristic of the pcm learning. Had that problem on my gf's fathers dodge, had it serviced and it shifted like crap, brought it back n the guy said drive it more. Its been fine ever since. Give it a few see if it straightens things out. Be interested to hear from bamorris after he gets his truck flashed. For you guys with the reflashes when was your build date?

Thanks for the help guys, I think I am going to leave the truck how it is. For now, I get no hesitation when I am on the gas, but a very small one just off idle. Anyway, maybe somewhere down the road I may get the reflash, who knows. My main question was if anyone else with the superchips still had ANY sort of hesitation at all with their truck? Lemme know!

My '04 FX4 Crew also has a build date of 07/04. What is the new or latest flash/firmware version? My current version is EAY4; not sure if any of the other numbers on the PCM are required to identify the version? I'm assuming you also had EAY4 due to the same build date of 07/04? Also, aside from throttle response, any other noticed differences good or bad? Thanks!
My reflash
Had my reflash on 10-06-04 and my build date was 07/04
My original PCM code was KEN2. The new reflash as marked on the sticker was 4U7A 12A650 ACD. I did this to get rid of a previous Superchips Program from Troyer that I got last year. We needed to go back to stock before Mike Troyer could build my new Xcalibrator tuning programs. It depended on what the factory tune was before he could key in the Xcalibrator to my tune.
Anyway, the reflash numbers above equaled a factory code of CBE3. Of course now we have the Xcalibrator and I put in a 91 octane performance tune to start. So far so good, its awsome!
By the way, after the factory reflash and loosing my 91 tow/perf tune the truck ran like a slug. Throttle was ok but I knew what I had lost. Mucho better now!

Made it to the dealer today and found out some info pertaining to throttle hesitation. I have an '04 F150 FX4 Crew buid date 07/04. The good news TSB 04-21-14 exists for throttle hesitation on '04 F150s. After talking with the service rep, they ran a search for throttle lag/hesitation and found the TSB. Even without the TSB, the dealer had no problem telling me to stop in and they would hook up my truck to the WDS and see if a new PCM version exists and if so would download it.
However, the WDS machine at the dealer had a networking issue (tech rep was not aware of this issue when talking to me on the phone) and thus they could not check if a newer PCM version exists for my truck. Note the WDS connects directly to Ford, reads your PCM and determines if a newer version exists and if so asks the technician if it should be downloaded (for an overview, see the MotorCraft link:

If a new version does exist for my truck, because the WDS machine was down I don't yet have the new PCM numbers equivalent to the 'Stock PCM' data I show below. When I get back to the dealer and if I need a newer version, I'll post the PCM version data then.
Notice in the message posted 01/10/05 HamRadio mentions he also had a 07/04 build date but his stock PCM data was KEN2 which does not match mine at EAY4. I think I read somewhere that the 'Version' varies based on several factors none of which I can remember.
Stock PCM:
Motorola M7996
Model: 4L3A-12A650-AEE
Serial #:6EXN28301GN1
Version: EAY4
TSB 04-21-14 - Hesitation on acceleration and/or erratic idle when coming to a stop.
Publication date: 10/18/04.
Issue: Some 2004 F0150 vehicles equipped with a 5.4L 3-valve engine may exhibit a hesitation on acceleration and/or erratic idle when coming to a stop.
Action: Reprogram the PCM to the latest calibration using WDS release B33.9 or higher. Calibration files may also be obtained at www.motorcraft.com
Operation: 042114A Check for diagnostic trouble codes and reprogram PCM (.4 hr).

ftkcignusx1, I believe that I have the same version as you do. This would lead me to believe that if your truck needs the reflash, mine possibly might also. The thing that I am concerned about, as stated above, is with the Superchips, I still have this small off idle hesitation. Do you all think I should live with that, cause it will probably be the same if I get reflash then re-program with 1714? I think that I am just going to leave it, but I am not sure what to do. If there is a newer version of software out there, then if it is just like a PC, there are bugs fixed, and would it be worth it to go through the hassle of unprogramming, reflashing, sending out tuner, then reprogramming, or just leave it how it is???

Just had the reflash done on my truck per TSB 04-21-14 and it did't do anything for the poor throttle response or the rough idle. I can still punch the throttle to the floor and release it (in park) and the idle speed only goes up to about 1000. The new version of the software, at least for my truck, is RAZ5A3.HE. This version number is read from my OBDII reader and differs from the format that is posted above. The dealer didn't put a sticker in the engine compartment like they're supposed to do. The old version before the reflash was RXA3AZ.HE
