I had a Magnaflow muffler put on my truck about 6 months ago. Just cut out old muffler and put in Magnaflow. It's a little louder than stock but not much. Yesterday I had the Magnaflow cut out and a straight pipe put in. It sounds pretty freakin nice. It's kinda loud in my garage starting it up when it's cold and the idle is up but other than that it sounds almost perfect, maybe just a little too loud. Now the weird thing. There is no drone in the cabin at speed. It quiets right down. I can't imagine a magnaflow droning, as quiet as mine was. Now I'm debating on finding a muffler that's louder than the Magnaflow or just leaving in the straight pipe.

I think the drone comes from the internal design of the muffler. Flowmaster has a pretty healthy drone but if you look at a cutaway of one it’s just a hollow echo chamber with a few baffles redirecting the flow. Magnaflow is straight through and doesn’t drone. That’s probably why your straight pipe setup doesn’t drone; it’s just louder.

I also just cut the OEM muffler out and welded in a Magnaflow. It’s been about a year now and it has finally got louder but still no drone.

Wouldn’t it be interesting to see some dyno numbers on the set-up you have verse Magnaflow? Magnaflow claims no loss of torque at low rpm’s in fact they claim a significant increase of hp & torque throughout the rpm range. My thought being they are both a straight through set-up.

Wouldn’t be very many cat-backs being sold if the straight pipe showed hp & torque gains throughout the rpm range but there would probably be an increased demand for chrome exhaust tips.

14.7 HP at the wheels on the new 300 HP 3-valve 5.4 motors - along with gaining torque everywhere

I sure wish they would have shipped me the non droning one like you guys got. I got it from Troyer, great to deal with BTW.
Must be something wrong with yours. I have the same system on my 04 and I can't even hear it under normal driving and definately no drone.

The dual rear exit Magnaflow is louder than stock at most speeds. Not obnoxious, but I would expect an aftermarket exhaust to sing to me a little bit. One of the reasons I changed from stock was for the sound. Don't know about the single out systems as I've never heard one...Kevin

Single out exits closer to the cab so you will get a little more noise.
