I had the same whine this moring, probably 3-4 seconds also. Does anyone know what this is? Should we be worried? My truck only has 2500 miles. Also, has anyone noticed their trucks shifting slow (holding second and/or third longer than normal) when its below 20° and the truck is still cold.

Every vehicle I've ever owned has made funny noised in xtreme cold temps. My truck rattles and moans, the bimmer rattles and squeaks, my old Expy squeeled like stuck pig for a few minutes, my 97 F150 did the same... if you don't want any noises park in a semi-heated garage to keep the temps above freezing. No funny noises then!

Every vehicle makes that whining noise. My parent have a Ram 1500 that makes the same noise all 3 of my last trucks made that noise and even mothers Ranger FX4 makes that noise.
I think it's the fan starting up. It goes away after a couple of seconds.

Does your tranny groan when you first put into gear, maybe for block or 2? I have another post going for that. Something about tranny solenoids??, So the dealer thinks, over the phone. taking her in Wens. morn.

No, I have not experienced a groan. Just slower than normal shifting. But let me know what happens with your truck. You never know who's next.

When the weather got colder mine would start for a split second then shut down when I used the remote start. Turns out the alarm was shutting the engine down in cold weather - on startup the car revs higher & the alarm thoughtthe engine was overreving. Dealer disconnected the TACH wire & went tothe times sequence. To me it sounds like your trucks alarm is sensing the over rev condition.
