Rear differential howl
Hello to all..... First post.....Great forum BTW,
Did a search and found this thread concerning what I believe is my problem as well. The all mighty WHINE! Have 15000 mi. on mine and it's there. Question. Are you guys having better luck now with repairs since the new TSB 05-6-18 fix is out? (thanks Quintin). Are the parts in short supply?
Want to take it in to the dealer as my 2003 is still under warranty. Any new updates and info appreciated.
Thanks....

I wanted to add to this. Someone asked early on in this thread if the '05 has this howl problem.
Yes it does, mine is getting worse and worse, I am glad I stumbled on this thread. I will write down the TSB number and take it with me to the dealership so I can get this fixed.
Thanks.

I'm back after a long hiatus of not visiting the site.
Anyway, I had my truck in last week for the TSB 05-6-18 fix. Unfortunately, the howl is still there. It still does it just like it used to before the work. Howls between 45 and 55 MPH with enough pressure on the throttle to maintain the speed. Release the throttle and the howl goes away.
To add to that, I discovered that the rear differential is now leaking a good spot of gear oil every time I park! So, now I'm having to take time out of my work day again to take it back to the dealer today!!

So, they fixed the oil leak. The seal was bad, so they had to replace the cover gasket. The howl is still there. Going to run it for another couple of thousand miles, like they told me to, and then take it back again.
Hi all. I just wanted to let you know that your trucks are NOT the only ones with some sort of rear end problems. I drive an 04 Nissan Titan and thought I'd share a few things thay may help you out.
Be SURE to check your rear gear oil level! There were a bunch of Titans sent out very low! Also make sure you're using the recommended gear oil. In the case of the Titan, Nissan changed the recommended gear oil from 90w dino oil, to 90w synthetic, and now to 140W synthetic gear oil.
Nissan did this because they were getting some trucks back with blown rear ends. The ones who did have problems were only trucks used to tow. Nissan also now suggests changing the gear oil every 3000 miles for those who do tow heavy loads.
I'm not too familiar with the gear oil recommendation on the Ford trucks but hopefully some of this information can/will help those of you who may be having problems, as well as those of you who may have problems in the future. CHECK THAT REAR END OIL LEVEL!
Lets face it, even though we may drive different vehicles, we all have a common love and/or need for trucks, and share quite a few common issues. I've real about similar problems on Dodge and GM sites as well. You're not alone here folks.
Thanks for letting me post. I hope I've been of some help.

Unfortunately the truck now has a SHUDDER coming somewhere from the rear end first thing in the AM or when been sititng all day. Lasts about 2 seconds-- like the gears are getting meshed or maybe a ujoint going out???
I'll let it go another 4 or 5k then take it in-- will pay close attention to 3 yr / 36,000 miles, though...
Anyhow, other than that, truck is cool, get about 15.6 mpg with Lariat top on '04 SCREW.

THIS IS THE THIRD REAREND -- THE ORIGINAL ONE, ONE AT 5,100 MILES AND NOW THIS ONE AT 10,200 MILES-- BOUGHT IT JUNE 2004.
I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THE TOLERANCES ON THESE REARENDS ARE SO TIGHT, THAT IF THE TECH DOESN'T CHECK, RE-CHECK, AND TRIPLE CHECK, THE PROBLEM WILL COME BACK AGAIN......WHAT A SHAME, A $40,000 INVESTMENT THAT GIVES YOU NO CONFIDENCE WHATSOEVER...
IS IT A LEMON??? I'VE HEARD PURSUING THESE THINGS COST YOU TIME AND MONEY FROM WORK AND IN THE END YOU GET YOUR DUE, LESS DEPRECIATION--- SEEMS THE LESSER OF THE TWO EVILS IS TO TRADE, BUT THAT IS A GOAT ROP'IN THE WAY TRUCK PRICES HAVE FALLEN
...BUT HEY, THERE ARE MUCH WORSE THINGS IN LIFE---RIGHT?

I called the service department and was informed that Ford has recognized a problem with the seal, redesigned them again, and is replacing them on a case-by-case basis. My truck's going in again this afternoon for the third or fourth set of gears (lost count) and another seal. Even though the service department is picking up the cost of my rental, I'm still thoroughly disgusted.
I have the 355 rear end in my truck. Turns out that it was the pinion flange and gasget that was leaking. They were replaced after a slight delay waiting for the parts. The dealership service department was informed by Ford that they will not be putting any more gear sets into my truck because they don't think it will do any good or make the problem better/go away.
holy Crap
Ive had my truck do the whine or howl ever since I bought the truck, I thought It was normal!! Until a cousin told me that wasnt normal and searched here, I get it everytime I accelarate at 30 mph and up,. So just take it to the dealer and tell them what????

My 3.55 limited slip 9.75 is quiet. The clutches have started to chatter a bit since the weather's gotten cooler, it quits after the differential fluid warms up though, after 3-4 miles maybe.
