New To Forums...Quick Exhaust ?

Hey guys I'm new to the F150 forums and have a quick question about a new exhaust...

To start out I have an '04 F150 (5.4) Supercrew FX4 with a ProComp 6" lift on 35" ProComp muds. Decided that the stock exhaust is too quiet, and needs some growl. I am going with the Airraid intake, and probably a Flowmaster 40 series muffler, with a local guy that will bend up the remaining exhaust.

My question is, how long and what diameter should the tail pipe be that our mechanic constructs? A small turn down pipe right out of the muffler, or a longer pipe that extends to the rear? I'm not worried about peak HP, my truck is not meant for racing with the lift and tires anyways, and I don't plan on taking it to the track any time soon.... Plus, I'm only 19, so the louder the better!

I have done a search, and it seems the Flowmaster 40 series muffler gets the job done, but what about the remaining pipe?

TIA...

The tail pipe pass the muffler main purpose is to carry the exhaust gases out from under the truck/car. There is always a risk if you turn them down at the muffler of getting fumes back into the cab. If you run a single out, use the same dia. size as the inlet of the muffler. If you run duals, 2" to 2.25" is all you need pass the muffler. It’s difficult to get the clearance you need around the spare tire if you go larger than 2.25". Adding a larger dia tip will give you a deep sound. On 2" or 2.25" a 3" to 4" dia 12" to 16" should help amplify the sound.

I would look at replacing the stock Y pipe while you’re having this done. My opinion is the Masterflow Y pipe is a great one.

Have fun

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the Y pipe? Thanks for the response...

Y pipe

The Y pipe is the pipe that comes off the engine behind the cats. It Y's down to a single pipe that goes to the muffler.

If all you want is a louder exhaust, you could always cut the stock muffler off and weld in a piece of pipe. That would be the cheap way out. I'm sure the Flowmaster 40 would be a better setup though.
