Does anyone make an aluminum driveshaft for these trucks???
Does anyone make an aluminum driveshaft for these trucks???
I know for me to hold my breath and hope Ford makes one for these trucks is usless. Do any aftermarket companies make them for us yet? I'm praying the dealership can fix my vibration problem, and if they can I will be the happiest person in the world. I still think a much lighter rotating mass like the driveshaft would only make it even better.
Thanks for the input.

My understanding is that any reputable driveline shop should be able to fabricate you one. This is my last resort should the stealership fail to fix my truck. I have too many thinks going on in my life to fight Ford over this through the DSB process.
Interesting you bring this up, because I was just reading on that "other" site a member posting that he had a custom shaft made and all his vibration woes are gone.
However another member stated that he feels the problem is not the mass, but the length.
And yet a third member is convinced that its because of weights which fell off his. He noted that the shafts are marked "DO NOT DROP" yet his has a gouge and abrasions which clearly indicate a drop of some sort.
All summarized, there appear to be a lot of people convinced this "vibe" problem is driveshaft related.
I'm just glad mine is smooth as silk.

I figured I would have to have it custom made.
I can certainly see how the length and weight of that driveshaft can be a major factor in vibrations. I got under the truck today and that steel shaft is defenitly long and the diameter of the shaft isn't to big. A nice light weight aluminum shaft with a larger diameter should help out a lot.
I also have a 92 Camaro and GM made an aluminum driveshaft which was an option on some of the models. Swap that in and man what a difference, smooth and you also gain some throttle response since its easier to spin.
I'll see if Ford can make this anoying vibration go away, if not I'm on the hunt for a shop that can make me a custom one.

I remember someone here posted that replacing the DS thru a driveline place fixed their vib. They said they paid about $600 for it. He also said that the driveline shop tech said it was 1.5" too short.
Let us know how it goes if you have it done.

I'm just curious to see how many people would be interested in something like this?
Maybe if we can get a group of people we can find a shop to make these for us and cut us a group rate. I don't know of any driveline shops off hand but if somebody knows of one that they trust please post.
I just had the worst shake with the truck this morning, came right at about 55mph. Unreal, I have to get this fixed.
Thanks

I thought about doing the DS at a shop, but after a bit more thinking, FMC needs to deal with it. Have them try the new TSB's Happy. if they don't help, start the DSB process. That is all we can do
Oh I'm in total agreement with you about Ford stepping up and fixing this problem. I'm not looking to spend more money after I purchased a brand new truck, but from reading that TSB it seems like they are masking the problem. I mean come on a 20 mile test drive. My comute is 13 miles each way.
I just figured that if I am going to do any modifications to my truck, this has to be top of the list. An aluminum driveshaft may help our vibe problem as well as free up some roatating weight, which is a good thing from a performance standpoint.
I'll give Ford a chance to fix this, but I would rather not have to deal with a whole DSB thing. I really do love this truck, everything about it except that vibration.

i dont know if an aluminum Driveshaft would be such a good idea. Have you seen how big the steel one under there is right now. To make one out of aluminum and be just as strong, it would be HUGE!.... Just a thought.
I bought a carbon fiber shaft for my truck. When I upgraded to 4.56s, my vibration got a lot worse, which immediately told me that my vibes were caused by the driveshaft since it's now spinning a good bit faster. I dropped nearly $800 on a carbon fiber shaft, but I now a 1000% vibration free truck. The shaft is too long and too heavy. The driveshaft shop would have built me an aluminum, but with the 4.56 gears, it could still vibrate a little. Therefore, any of you with stock gears, the aluminum should eliminate the dreaded 45-60 mph vibration most of you have. I was able to get mine at a discount because I have a connection with a company who buys direct from the driveshaft shop, PST. I sell import performance parts for a living, so I have a few connections, and this one worked out well. I can get you guys the aluminum shafts at a pretty decent price, maybe $400? or so. I never got the price quote on the aluminum, so I don't know for sure. PM me if you may be interested. OR, you can try contacting the driveshaft shop directly... www.pstds.com. I know the measurements needed for my truck (super cab, 6.5' bed, 4WD.) The problem is the variety of lenghts that probably exist between the difference configurations. On thier website, they show you how to take the proper measurements.
Robert,
You were the person I was looking for. Somebody on another site mentioned you did this to your truck. I am not looking to change gears and I have the 3.55 ratio so an aluminum shaft should be perfect. This is something I am very interested in doing to my truck for the same reasons you mentioned. The shaft is long and heavy but the diameter is small so I know it has to be vibrating under there. A nice light weight aluminum shaft with a larger diameter should help out a ton.
Can you please send me and email to shara100@aol.com or provide me with yours so I can contact you? I am interested to know pricing and what diameter the shaft would be. I certainly appreciate any help you can provide.
Thanks
