$27.99 Gatorback mini mod

I replaced my stock Motorcraft serpentine belt with a Goodyear Gatorback today. I was getting a squeal on WOT up shifts. It was an easy job that looked difficult at first glance. By removing the bolt that secures the air intake tube, I separated it from the filter box (just snaps in and out) and moved it out of the way. This gives you sufficient access needed to change the belt. The Gatorback runs considerably quieter at idle and doesn’t squeal on WOT up shifts now. Gatorback part # for the 5.4 3-valve is 4061020 (102.0" length). I got mine at Auto Zone for $27.99 + tax.

It comes off pretty quick, but i messed up and started routing it around the fan, and you dont have to, doh. And if you have the 4.6 talking off the intake is useless, but an extra set of hands to help is nice too

YOMAN-
Look at the little sticker under the hood showing the belt routing. The spring loaded tensioner works the same as every other serpentine belt tensioner on every other automotive engine made in the last 15 years. They all use a 3/8" or 1/2" drive ratchet or breaker bar in the 3/8" or 1/2" square hole to lift up on the pulley and release the tension on the belt.

You need a ½” ratchet. I put a pipe over the one I used so I could get more leverage. This pic isn’t a 3-valve but it shows the tensioner and the ½” square hole you put the ratchet (serpentine tool) in.

Edit…sorry for that dumb response, I read the ? wrong…

Yeah, after the tuner it started to squeal on the 1-2 up-shift but overall it’s a quieter running belt. You notice it when you’re idling.

Have a note to go pick one up myself.
Hate it when I'm gunning it and it squeels. I look around and pretend it wasn't me as I run in shame.
