Volant pulling their intakes for redesign.

I just spoke with Volant. They are redesigning their intake due to a lean condition caused in colder climates. They hope to have it ready by Christmas.

Thanks,
Adam

I did not catch a name but when I called Volant, I talked with what sounded like a unknowledgeable sales rep. he put me on the phone with someone who knew what they were talking about. He said they have met with several engineers and are possibly going to be putting some type of Honeycomb in side the intake. He said that they are having to do this because of the new way the computer reads the incoming air.

So... If an intake is sucking to much air then what is the need for the air intake upgrade in the first place?

Isn't more air the whole point? If anything shoulden't the PCM be reprogrammed to match the incomming air volume with more gas?

I fail to see the whole purpose of the intake mod.

I have had ZERO problems so far with mine. But I live in Florida. Colder months are coming up, hope it isnt an issue. That would really suck.

I think the reason they are running into a problem is this,

Ford is using a different MAF as prior years. For whatever reason, it will not/cannot cope a design change in the tube and will go lean because of the difference in air flow. Whether it be to all the air coming thru the middle of the tube, rather than the sides or vice versa.

Secondly, without hoping on a dyno and Verfying A/F ratios, everyone with an aftermarket tube is in danger of burning up pistons/plugs/engine damage. Check engine light or not coming on. This will void your warrenty.

Third and last, just because you have a "tuner" doesnt mean your safe. You would still have to hope on a dyno with a Wideband and then "tune" it to a safe A/F level. You cannot do this otherwise or any other way without measuring the A/F level.

My 97 4.6 seems to run lean in cold weather also, the exhaust tone gets louder than in warm weather and it seems to lose a little power.I have the iceman intake with a tornado installed, and i have a Gibson super truck exhaust and a JET chip.
Does anyone know what i could do to help this proble

thank You,
Randy

How can we tell we are getting the new design? I also spoke to volant for a tracking # & they said I would get the new design & to call back for a tracking #, I will call today. They didn't say anything about a delay until Christmas.

You won't be getting the new design. I had a Volant and wanted to keep it and wait for the fix. They told me late December. I returned it and installed an Airraid. Works great. I have superchips 1714, Magnaflow SIDO, and Airraid. May return the superchip and go with Troyer Custom Tune series instead. Regardless, if the Volant that you receive accepts straight through flow of air without anything to dampen it, you will run lean if you are in any of the colder climates. My ran lean without an outside temp of 55 degrees.

Can anyone with the "old" Volant verify the part number? I have a system coming and I want to verify whether it's the old or updated version. TIA.

From what I have been told by volant the new design will be out jan 05. If you ordered it already I don't think you will be getting the new tube.

Below is volant's new air tube design. Notice the how the diameter decreases before the air sensor. They have also put 2 brass threaded nuts (use the stock screws) to mount the sensor.
