What's that smell?!?!?

So I walk by the tailgate of my truck yesterday and it smells like rotten eggs.

I remember some older cars in the 90's smelling like sulfur, but my truck has never smelled like this until the last two days.

I actually accused my employee of making the stink...

No weird stinch with my 05... not sure what to tell you.

It could be the new metal getting 'hot'. I know I have noted a 'new truck' odor after driving it...

I know the smell you're talking about. I actually enjoy that smell. The new smell is not pleasant at all, and literally smells like a stink bomb.

its ur cat converter, switch gas stations. Sometimes the levels of sulpher are higher and your cat fails. This will also happen if you have the truck under a heavy load and then stop. Lets say your floored it at a light and then came to rest at another. If the sulpher compounds were higher than normal in a rich condition the cat would fail to handle the excess, hence the smell. If switching brands of gas doesnt solve it and its really bad look for a possible rich condition: vac leak, o2 sensor, ignition problems.

that sounds like a cat converter to me also... my dad has a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder and they went out a year after he bought the truck... Nissan replaced them for free

Thanks vvyk3d,

I have actually been pondering the O2 sensor possibility, since I have had a few morning startups where the truck heaved and shook. The idle hasn't been particularly smooth at all times.

It's Mobil gasoline in there right now, and the truck seems to run best on their fuel, so I hope that's not the culprit.

Thanks for the help.

Chandler

just because its mobile gas doesnt mean its not crappy gas. Like i said switch stations see if the smell lessens, even switch to a different mobile station if u dont wanna get a different brand. Could be that dreaded "winter blend" gas. Has it just recently started? If that doesnt help have someone throw a diagnostic on it. Ive had the smell on my 04 a few times when i was in it heavilly or depending on where i fueled up. Id say unless ur seeing massive mpg drop its not your O2 or a rich condition. Get some diff gas before you start finding problems that might not exist.
