Unhappy Volant help

ok, I installed my Volant intake on my 5.4L '04. I reset the computer by taking off the battery cables for the entire time of the install. The trucks starts but when I push down the throttle it chokes out and dies. I need some help here. I know many people have installed the kit and love it. Where did I go wrong? Any ideas? I really don't want to put the factory equipment back in, but I need my truck for work tomorrow. HELP, please...

Let's just say I am dumb.

I installed it at dark and put the sensor on backwards.

Sounds GREAT now and can't wait to check up on performance gains, or possible lack there of.

Here's my sign. :o

SideIt,

Where did you get yours? Did you get the snorkle also? Can I ask the cost? I have a few bookmarked but I don't see them say the snorkle is included.

Does anyone know if it really makes a difference or not?

Thanks

I do not have the snorkel (yet). I wont mention where i bought becuase their service SUCKS. took 1 month to get here. listed as 3-5 day shipping.

Price was 262.39 including shipping.

the snorkel kit was over $100 extra and i couldn't justify it to my wife...

I know two people here in Ft. Worth with the snorkel and they contend they can tell a difference.

Either way, my truck breathes a lot better now and it sounds great. I am not claiming any performance gains... just saying I love it, and did a lot of research before deciding on Volant... Couldn't be happier.

How about the drone in the cab any?

Do you have stock exhaust or have you done a mod?

I am about a click away from ordering it just want to make sure.

Thanks

A little research on Volant

I couldn't tell you right now if you will actually *need* a custom tune or not, as I'd have to have the fuel trim & A/F info data - I.E., the results from installing that Volant air intake system. Right now, there are only 2 intake kits for the 2004 & newer 3-valve 5.4 F-150 that we can guarantee will not cause the motor to run dangerously lean if installed properly (and only one of them that actually gains any power) - and Volant isn't one of them. We've tested many intakes for the 2004 3-valve 5.4 F-150, but we have not looked at Volant in months.

Virtually all of the intake makers have had more than one version of their kits, many made rapid changes when they got reports of lean conditions on customer's vehicles after installation (usually due to not doing proper R&D up front to test fuel trims & wide-band A/F's on numerous vehicles prior to release - before 2004 in the F-150 this really wasn't an issue, but with the new 2004 3-valve 5.4 it is).

So right now, I don't know if your Volant intake is OK, not altering fuel trims & A/F's significantly and thus you could use the 1714 no problem - or whether we're going to have to do a custom transfer function to make it safe.

You'll need to give us a call to go over this, & we can give you the info on how to do the datalogging we'll need to determine if your Volant intake is actually safe to use. Everything else is OK of course, the only potential concern would be the intake kit - it may be fine, it might not be, and you can't depend on warning lights on the dash, etc. - only fuels trims & wideband A/F's. We've seen conditions as lean as 19:1 caused by intake kits not throw an MIL on the dash to warn the driver, for example.

So the volant air intake causes a lean condition? I just ordered one. And I thought I did my homework.

he is speaking of using the chip mods with the volant from what i can tell.

I have a cat back single in dual out Flo-Pro exhaust with the volant. it sounds great when you punch it. like a deep growl. I could hear a minor drone at 80mph. nothing much below that speed(rpm's).

I have several friends with the Volant and no problems so far. I did call Volant and they mentioned a new model would be released during the first week of december. It is to fix any sensor errors that some are having. I drove it over 200 miles today and no warnings.

I don't regret my decision... I can find bad reports on any mod for our trucks.

SPC,
Not necessarily. Superchips Distributor sells Airaid intakes. That is the only one that he is for sure will not cause the lean air/fuel ratio condition. I have read several of his posts, and have purchased a Super Tuner from him and can tell you that he knows a lot about the 3 valve 5.4 engine. I haven't seen him post anything really slamming the Volant, but if he(Mike Troyer) sells you something, chances are that he has tested that same item at his shop...Kevin
Just went to Volant's website and they do not have an intake listed for the 2004 5.4 3 valve engine. There must be a reason for them pulling it from their site.(it used to be listed)
