I had to get my badges replaced a few months back because the black was coming off. New ones seem to be holding up.

 

I used brake cleaner with a rag to get the black off and then used a q-tip to get the little stuff. Then cleaned em up good with alcohol and painted them black. So far so good.

 

What exactly is "aircraft remover?"

 

You used brake cleaner to get the black off, and then re-sprayed them black?

 

Aircraft paint thinner. Available at most auto part stores. Eats tha paint right off like it was nothing.

 

i used acetone and Qtips, left them on the truck just taped off around them really well with double layer of masking tape

Also quite handy for removing the occasional aircraft residue from the front in the summertime

 

I stripped them down and sanded them to have a better base to paint on. I painted the entire badge black- not just the lettering.

 

I used mineral spirits. I folded up a rag the size of the emblem and soaked it with mineral spirits, and than held the rag to the emblem for about 30seconds. I used a plastic wire cap to scrape out the tough paint.


I got lazy on the passenger side and just did the F-150

 

On my 06 the tailgate has a little bubble in it. One day when I am not so lazy I am going to just acetone the whole thing. I may paint them white to match the truck.

Are their holes in the fender or do they just stick on? Same for the tailgate.

 

They all have guide holes. Sucks but it makes lining them up a whole lot easier!

I decided to ditch the whole idea. It doesn't look quite right on my truck. Eventually I might do some of the Billet Badges but not anytime soon.

 

I tried the acetone trick too, but also had zero luck with them. I was thinking of trying some paint stripper, I'm sure that will it off.

And thump, yes the lettering is very time consuming to tape off. I ended up taping off the whole emblem and using a razor to cut out the letters and remove the areas that I wanted painted. I never have done my tailgate emblem yet, but I was thinking of getting some contact paper and laying it over the whole emblem and then cutting out the lettering. I thought it may do a little cleaner job.

Back to the original poster, the oval emblem overlay's can be found all over ebay. Just make sure they are specifically for our year trucks, as earlier models had smaller emblems. I have had my carbon fiber/chrome overlays on for over two years now and they are still looking good.
