Just calculated MPG my 2nd tank of gas (I'm a little over 500mi now) on my '05 Lariat SCREW/5.4L/3.73LS.

I drive pretty conservatively, and RARELY stomp on it. This tank of gas gave me 10.25 MPG !!!

I recently put 325/60/18 tires on, but most of this tank was before the tire change and the info center was telling me 11.1 or 11.0. I only live 2 mi from work and never get on the highway, but I know my mileage has to be better than this, right?

Was there ever a TSB released about poor mileage?

04 (New Style)
4x4
5.4
3.55
Everying still stock except the Line-x
@ 800miles I've gone from 15 to 16mpg during the break in. Very Happy so Far!
Our 97 4x4 5.4 Expedition gets 17 however the HP and weight is much less.
Without proof Mind you, I don't want to spend $6. The Up/Down tailgate MPG discussion would have to factor in @ speed tested. At higher speeds the air flow would pass over the tailgate. At lower speeds the air flow would catch the gate.
What's more important is Looks. Never drive with tailgate down as this tends to make me, and other's like me, LOL.
The cover is a much better option and would prevent the air dam effect at lower speeds (speed dependant on bed length).

My FX4 Screw gets about 13.5 mpg mixed driving, and the bastard cost me $60 bucks to fill up ($2.50 gallon cheapest 87 I can find).

My 330 BMW gets about 22 mpg mixed driving, and that little bastard cost me $40 bucks to fill up ($2.70 gallon cheapest 91 I can find).

San Diego, officially the highest gas prices in the nation

Yup, not as bad as $5.50 a gallon for those people across the pond in Europe, but it's not something we are really used to.

I'm with you Boston guy, go Socks!!!!!

My 16mph is probably the best I can get. Land is mostly flat around here. I've been careful, watching my gears and allowing then to shift at lower RPM's. Staying off the accelerator, Keeping 70MPH on the HW. Yea I'm getting Old.
I would guess the MPH discrepancies between other F150 might be a factor of owner habits. Ford would have a serious issue in process control if there were a 5.MPH variance in the engines they sell.

Oh yeah - mines a 4x4 as well - forgot to add that.

I think I'll take it in to the dealership to have them look at it. I have no idea what they'd look for though....

I'd get it checked out before considering any mods. Your highway mileage is worse than my normal average over hilly terrain and muddy roads. Under my 'normal' conditions I get a consistent 12-12.5 average. I've only had mine out on the freeway twice for trips from here to Seattle and both came in around 18.8 for the highway portion and about 16 mpg for the tank. The rest of the tank was used in town, so roughly half was highway driving. I didn't get up to 80 much, too much traffic.

Let me ask you this...

I'm going to take a highway test drive to see if I see a difference. How long should it take the info center to reflect better mileage? Does it adjust pretty quickly?

To get your highway fuel economy, hit the road, set the cruise, and RESET your mpg computer. Travel for 5 miles without touching anything. That will give you an accurate gauge of your cruising consumption rate. That number does not however, reflect what you should expect during your daily commute..

Note that if you don't reset your info center, it will calcuate a rolling average of all the tanks since you last reset it... and it will always read lower than what you actually got on that last tank... get it?

Ya'll remember me?

Well, just to give you an update...

I have just shy of 11k miles and my baby will be 1 year old on Friday.

I am still averaging 12-13 mpg highway and 9-10 city. Winter it will drop by about 2 mpg.

Nothing has changed. I have stopped resetting the trip odometer all of the time so I'm not constantly checking my fuel economy.

Other than that, I love my baby!!!

Well, I took a little test drive down the highway today to test out highway mileage. I set the cruise at around 61 and reset the MPG computer. Five miles later I was around 18.4! On the way back I did the same but got around 16.5. Not sure why...(uphill vs downhill? With/against the wind?)

I guess this tells me 1) that my truck is running fine and 2) boy, does stop and go traffic have a real impact on your MPG! The 10.25 I got from the last tank must have been from my 2mi drive to work everyday, no highway, and FIVE stoplights on the way.

The upside is that at over a month old, I only have ~600 miles on my truck and I only fill up every 2 weeks or so.
