mods to improve mileage?

alright gents, as gas prices get higher and money seems to be going away quicker im looking for some mileage improvements. My truck only has 1800 miles so its in that awkward 13/15 range that some people have mentioned. Im looking for mods that you guys did that improved your mileage and a cost associated with that mod. i know the 3 big ones are tuner, intake, exhaust, with maybe a fourth being a tonneau. So which one did u see the greatest improvment for and what was the cost. Thanks.

Dan

I found that if I didn't drive it, I saved much more money on gas than I did when I did drive it.

You don't buy a SuperCab 4x4, 3.73 limited, 5.4 litre and worry about fuel economy. If that's a concern, buy a car. Don't start doing mods EXPECTING better mileage, you'll only be disappointed. All of my miles are city driving and I have gotten between 13-14 mpg since new. I now have 4100 miles on her. I have the Superchips 1714 tuner. On the 87 octane tune, I got 13.5 mpg. On the Hi performance tune with 93 octane gas (where people claim better mileage), I got 13.5 mpg. No change.

Perhaps you dont buy that combo and worry about better fuel economy, but i do, apparently my money tree isnt blooming this time of year like yours is. Im not expecting 20+ mpg like a car. Im aware its a truck. I see alot of others getting much better than what im seeing and would like to be there. Just wondering what those people are doing. IF those mods dont exist then so be it, but if they do id like to hear what they are.

my best guess is that the best mods for improving mileage would be Electric fans and under drive pulleys. After that if you still want more you might squeze a couple more from exaust and intake.

But I would probably go for fans and pulleys first.

I get a solid 16mpg all local driving. I do have a 4x2 with a 3:55 rear though, that helps a little I’m sure. The only mod I have is a Magnaflow muffler, not the cat back, just the muffler with all the stock tailpipe. I think you’ll get better mileage when you get a few more miles on your truck too. I doubt the costs of mods will ever balance themselves out with gas savings, but they’re fun to have cause of the performance gain.

Exactly. If you put on the above mentioned electric fans and underdrive pulleys thats about $550. IF you got 2 mpg better after these mod and drove 12000 miles a year using your average of 14 mpg stock and gas being $2 a gallon, it would take over 2 1/2 years to recoup your mod money.

I thought it was considering your sig says "More crap as soon as i can find it to buy." Sounds like you have the "money", just looking for the "crap".

although it will take some time to recoup the money spent on mods, you also have the benefit of some extra horsepower. Between 10 and 20 more at the wheels I bet.

under drive pulleys have a cost, the fuel savings is because you are under powering your accesories, it's not majic.

on a different note I think Dan's questions are completely valid thing to talk about in these types of forums.

IMO, I would go with a toneau cover, because it's not only helping with fuel economy, it looks good and is functional.
