Lifted MPGs?
Lifted MPGs?
Common guys! I know there are several of you turning 35s with 4.56 gears, but I can’t seem to get any feedback on mileage. Is it that bad?
My mileage dropped from 15/18 to 13/15 after my 4” lift and 35” tires. I’m looking to regear, but need feedback from those that’ve done it…
THANKS!

My MPG's are pretty *****ty but I knew that was gonna happen when I put on 20" rims and 36" tires and a 6" body lift. Not to mention my truck is about 900lbs heavier then the competition on average.
But I knew it was gonna suck down gas so I live with it.

From some of the vehicles I have seen lifted on bigger tires, their mileage goes down a bit with the stock gearing. But once they up the gearing they actually gain some mpg back, do to the fact that the vehicle was undergeared for the size of the tires; it was making the truck work harder, thus, worse mileage.
I get about 10-12 city with my truck on 3.73s. I plan on regearing to 4.56 once the warranty is over, but thats for power not for gas. If I wanted good mileage I would have bought a car. 13-15 is damn good with a lift and meaty tires.

Once again, I'm not complaining but rather trying to get specifics.
There are several people with lifts that have regeared, and some of them have posted saying that their mileage has improved. For some reason, however, none of them are posting specific MPG results. Instead, I get criticism from people who have not yet done it?
I realize that going to a 4.56 is going to improve performance (hell, I replaced the 3.27 in my Cobra with 4.10), but you can't blame me for trying to do some research before forking over a grand

10 to 12 MpG city... 12 to 13 MpG Highway. 3:73 LS gear ratio. I am planning to go up to 4:56 just like Eddy when the warranty is over I would love for the MpG to go up but just want that extra punch off the line.
I am gonna put a Whipple Supercharger on so I am gonna have to re-gear its not a choice...

HAVE to regear with a supercharger?? whats wrong with the 3.73?
Also, no criticism being dished from my end either. You asked for mpg gains, if im getting that stock and your getting that with a lifted truck then that means its doing pretty well i think. Just posting some comparison numbers. Dont be so defensive. Have a dancing nanner, they cheer people up.

The Supercharger adds on about another 155 HP so you can be almost 100% sure that the 3:73 wont hold up for very long. Anything that puts up that high of a HP gain your gonna have to do a bit of tranny and gear adjustment.
Either that or burn through your rearend/tranny/gears alot... I dont have that kind of money so I go with what works together!

i have a 3.42 in my GN and it holds up just fine to 600hp. Whats special about ford gears? Is it because of the 4x4 option? I understand the bit about running out of rpm in a race application with a smaller gear but i dunno if ur gonna race it? Educate me good sir if u dont mind, PM if ud like, as i seem to have semi-hijacked the thread, sorry.

From my experience with mustangs, the problem came from a lower (higher numerical) gear when s/c and the fact that the car would "run out" of gear before the 1/4 mile. Now for n/a, most would run a higher numerical gear (say 4.10-4.30) vs those with s/c running lower numerical gearing (ie. stock 3.27, 3.55, 3.37) This was with the stock 5-speed tranny though. Once a 6-speed was swapped in, its a whole new game, 4.10's and 4.30's were fair game for the s/c engine.
