Speaking of CB's

a couple of cb posts have hopped up here lately; I'm looking for an antennae mount. I don't want the magnet on my roof, and I have a cap on my truck so I can't bedrail mount them. The mirrors don't offer anything, and I don't really want to screw into them. I think a bracket the comes through the hood gap is my only bet. Any other suggestions?

Maybe some form of bumper-clamp mount?!

I'd 3M tape it to the cap, IMO.

not sure how'd that affect the groundplane of the antenna. The main reason I don't want to roof mount it is because I frequently go off roading in narrow 'tunnel' trails and don't want the trees to hang up on the antennae.

Now I'm pondering glass mounts, but not sure how well they actually work. A pair of cell phone style antennae through my little tiny windows on the rear doors of my reg cab may be the ticket.

I have a 9' whip coming off my tool box in the bed.

In your case, I think your original idea in your post is the only bet on this truck....

Also though, a bumper mount is also an option. When off roading, you can tuck it in and clip it. (Depending on size of antenna)

I have used the glass mount antennas for VHF radios (2 way) as well as the CB atennas. These are ok for receiveing, but dont work very well for transmitting. The radio loads up into the inside coil and there is not true RF coupling to the outside antenna part. We used them for some undercover drug task force cars (2 way), but they were being used on a VHF repeater and around town were fine. As long as you are not trying to talk miles and miles, they will be fine, but if your wanting to reach out there, you will need a good antenna with a good ground plane.

Thanks bud, that's what I was thinking the results would be. That's a down the road project anyway.

A VHF antenna will transmit about 50 feet on the CB frequencies. CB is a much lower frequency range and needs a longer antenna to be effective, and to not cause damage to the output transistors of the CB radio.
