Cracked Windshield

Hey guys, my dad has an 04 Lariat XCab and he recently noticed a crack running along his windshield. He wasn't aware of any rocks or birds or anything that hit the windshield to cause it to crack. He inspected the outside and theres no chip in it, it's just a crack that started. Has anyone else had this problem or should he just replace it and go on about life. Or is it worth even taking it back to the dealer to question it? Thanks for the help!

My wife and I had the exact same thing happen on HER 01 Toyota Highlander. Please notice I said HER! The Toyota dealership decided it was a stress crack and it was all replaced under warranty at no charge. Let the Ford dealer know it was not hit by anything and I would assume they would do the same thing. Hope this helps.

Blake,

My windshield cracked the 1st time I had it on the highway (700 miles on the odo.). I believed (and still do) that it was a stress crack. The dealer said if there is no chip visible, they still have to do the "pen test" where they run a ball point pen along the crack...if they can feel any kind of chip with the tip of the pen, then the crack may have been caused by a road hazard and replacement isn't covered under warranty. Mine "failed" the pen test and it cost $440 to get it replaced.

There is another thing to watch out for if/when your dad gets his windshield replaced. After mine was replaced, the drivers side windshield cowl was loose. I figured they hadn't snapped it in properly. A couple of weeks ago, I removed it and found that two of the hooks that hold it in place were broken off. Apparently, the glass guy didn't know how to properly remove an '04 windshield vent cowl when he replaced my glass and must have yanked it off. I ordered a replacement piece from Ford Parts Network to install myself.

Good luck to your dad. He should at least take it to the dealer and hopefully they will be helpful...

Do "the pen test" yourself before you take it in. If you find any burrs in the crack then smooth them out. lol Just a little security.

$440?? Geez!, if you cant get the dealer to cover it under warranty before you take your truck anywhere to get the windshielf replaced ask your parts guy at your ford dealer who he has do windsheilds for them, i was going to get charged extra if i dropped it off at the dealership, so total cost for windhsield replacement was $220 because i took it there myself ironicly it was accross the street from the dealership too
