5.4 air intake systems
I have a 04 F150 with a 5.4, for those of you that have installed an air intake system could you please help me out on picking the best one for my truck. I also still have the stock exhaust, soon to be replaced by magnaflow. Thanks
Well I went with AirRaid and love it! Best looking in my opinion. But it is loud.
~Volant makes a nice one that is supposedly a bit quiter, looks great (box/heat shield design) and performs great from what I have heard. ~Another option is the True Flow, which takes a different approach to the intake design and replaces the tubing and filter only.
~ Another choice is Air Force One, which will be similar to the AirRaid with the heat sheild around the filter. Main difference is the piping is chrome, so its a good choice if you are looking for bling.
~CGS makes an intake as well, it looks real good and sporty, it doesnt have a heat shield around the filter (which most say makes no difference).
~Another choice is K&N's off road intake, it isnt street legal, but its K&N!
Hope this helps, try doing a search and you can see alot of pictures and opinions about intakes!

the airraid system is not bad choice. but I am waiting for the release of the airforce one. it is not released yet because they are makeing sure they get it right. it is a better quality intake not chrome but polished stainless steel. it will look nicer and possibly be quieter and perform just as good or better than the airraid but we won't know till it is released and we get feed back on it. it should be released any time now. I figure before the end of november for sure as several guys on here I am sure want one of those babys for christmas.:santa:
Any and all of the intakes will give basically the same power gains (if any). The slight variations in design will only be usefull for visual purposes. So basically pick whichever looks best to you. But be careful, because as of right now, Troyer is saying that the only intakes that dont cause a lean condition in the new 3-Valve engine are the AirRaid and AF1 (when it is released, some already have it...). All others that they have tested have caused a lean condition, which will trigger a check engine light.
I personally think the plastic intake looks better, the polished doesnt quite match imo. But the difference between plastic intake pipeing and metal will be of little consequence.

I agree there is mostely a visual difference. I think the polished stainles steel looks better but I agree it dosn't match anything else under the hood but I might someday deside to dress the engin up a little. I do think the air force one will definitely be quieter as metal dosn't vibrate as much as plastic as it is not as flexable. I also think that down the road 10+ years the plastic will become brittle and crack from all that vibration. so this is why I am waiting for the airforce one. we will see if it turns out to be any better when I and others give some feedback on it when it comes out in the next month or two.
