low range

I recently tested out my low range on some gravel roads and was really surprised on how hard it shifted for the first and second gear shif. It jerked the whole truck. Iv driven other low range vehicules and have never felt hard shifting like this. I brought it to the dealership and they compared it to another truck but and said it was the same. Has anyone else experienced this? it just doesent seem right. thanks

You shouldn't be driving in low range at speeds that would force a shift in the first place. Low range is just that, a very low gear that is meant for things like rock crawling or pulling a stuck buddy out of the muck. You shouldn't exceed more than 20 MPH in 4low to prevent excessive engine speed.

It's that high rev that's causing the hard shift, doing this enough will damage the tranny. Every 4x4 is designed differently, this is how Ford made theirs. Stick to 4hi for general driving. There is nothing wrong with your truck.

so how do you get to 20mph? first gear in Low range should not exceed 5 mph.

As far as high revs and tranny damage, thats no different than hard shifts at highway speeds in 2hi

Damage happens at whatever speed you beat the snot out of your truck.

Dont drive it in Drive or OD when in 4low. Then you can't get up to those speeds. You didn't try to shift out of 4low at that speed did you?
