Thermostat Question
Thermostat Question
Did a search on this but found nothing in regards to the 3-valve 5.4L engine. On my older truck and my Mustang Bullitt I added a lower temp thermostat and it helped quite a bit.
So my question is, can we change it out on the new truck? What is the stock temp stat? What aftermarket stat would be optimum for performance and to prevent detenation while running a lower grade fuel?
Thanks!

If you play with the engine temp too much, you may turn the CEL on since the engine will be running too cool to go into closed loop.
Running a little on the warmer side is better overall anyways. The hotter the engine runs, the less sludge and gunk will build up in the crankcase.

cooler engine temps DO NOT give you more power. Cooler AIR INTAKE temps do. Why mess with coolant temp? do you realize that the water cooled aircraft in WWII had 270 deg thermostats? but they flew in very cool air. That is why they had the power they did. metal expands when it is heated. The tolerances are made for 196 deg temps. bad idea to change coolant temps
BTW.. in the old days most engines had coolant running thru the intake manifold to help with drivability on cold days/cold weather startups. Cooler thermostat may have helped them with power. Our intakes are dry. It is pointless to go cooler.
