Waxing new paint?
Well I went to four different places today and only found the NXT wax. Nobody had the clay kit. Do you really think it's necessary? If I wax it now and then clay it later does that pose any problems?
wow, awesome post RockPick..... just reading this thread is gonna make me go out and get that clay kit and get to it. I never done this or known about it really. Always just washed and sometimes waxed my vehicles.
As for wax, my father has Liquid Glass, is that wax good enough? I've used it before on past vehicles and it seemed to be really good, on and off real easy. Or should i try the nxt?
Thanks for the feedback

Since we're all playing so nicely, I think I'll leave this thread in the 2004 Forum but, you guys should really make a pilgrimage up to the GENERAL CARE forum. We discuss this type of thing ALL THE TIME with much greater detail.
As for the questions...
The procedure you've mentioned is generally correct. I could add about 4 more steps but, I'll refrain from muddying the waters.
I'd recommend waxing more often than 2 times per year but, that may be adequate. Wax will deteriorate based on your specific environmental conditions. For example, if you're in the middle of Iowa during a drought, you may be fine with a couple times per year but, in Florida with the constant barrage from salt-laden air and precipitation, you're going to want to wax A LOT more often.
Clay as often as needed. I think you'll find that three times per year is pretty adequate but, again, this will vary based on your environment. For example, if you park near a railroad or live near an airport, you'll probably end up doing this more often. The indicator is if your paint is smooth to the touch. It should feel like the glass I mentioned in my first post.
The old school thought of twice per year being adequate is a wives tale in my opinion. Turtle Wax and Rain Dance have NOTHING on today's modern waxes.
Clay may or may not be necessary depending on the dealer preparation that was performed on your truck. I will say that I've only seen a couple of dealerships that do a complete and 'good' detail on a new vehicle off the truck. Also, I'll further mention that I've only seen a couple of vehicles total that didn't need to be clayed after driving off the lot.
This doesn't mean that you're going to ruin anything by applying a coat or three of NXT or any other quality wax. Rather it means that you'll be sealing the 'stuff' that is surficially attached to your truck's paint to the paint. This really isn't a huge deal either because, as long as you take care of it and sometime, down the road, clay the truck, you'll bring it back to ultra-slick glass. No worries. Just order some or keep a close eye out.
Clay is part of surface preparation. Surface preparation is one of the biggest keys to obtaining an optically perfect finish. Polish, clay, washing, etc... are all examples of surface preparation. Technique is key with all of these.
LG is, from what I understand, a pretty good product. It's been around for a LONG time and has stood the test of time. Personally, I've never tried it but, I've heard good things about it. Thus, from a comparison standpoint, I can't say that NXT or LG is better... that'll be up to you to decide. (NXT is cheaper and consists of synthetic polymers though... seems to me like technology might be the winner in this instance). *shrugs*
Feel free to ask more questions if you all have them.
