Question about a Sub for '04 SCrew
Question about a Sub for '04 SCrew
Hey guys - I'm going to go down this Thursday and get a sub box fabricated for my truck. It will have one 8" sub in it. I have 2 questions:
1. The radio shop is offering to build a box that will either fit under the rear seat, or behind the rear seat. He said either will fit my truck. So what setup is better. Under or behind the seat?
2. This will be the 1st sub that I will have ever owned. Will having a sub near the back seat render the back seats not suitable for children (1 yr & 7 yrs) to use? What I'm asking is will the vibration be too much for them? The type of music I listen to is Classic Rock and Country. And I don't play the music excessively loud when the kids are with me anyway. But none the less, will a sub be too much for kids comfort?
Thanks for your help

1. Behind the seat will save you storage room under the seat. However, tell 'em to slam in a 10" under the seat. There is room, and the range and punch of the 10 will knock your socks off. Granted, classic rock & country don't have deep deep bass, but with some power you can make it come alive. Or not. Anywho, if they can wedge a sub back there, go for it. Shouldn't muffle it too bad.
2. Warning: Bass will be MUCH boomier in back that what you hear in the front. They'll be ok, just keep the volume down or turn down the bass when the kiddies are on board. Set it to your liking in front, then go sit in back and jam. Adjust accordingly.

I got a JL AUDIO 8” Poly-Subwoofer, down firing under the passenger side rear seat, powered by an MRP-T220 Alpine amp. It’s more than enough for the inside of a Screw, more than enough. When the kids are riding with you just turn down the base a little, you’ll be OK. I don’t see where there would be any room for a sub box behind the seat.
I gotta agree with JP I dont see any room for a box behind the seat with enough airspace for any kind of punch. Under the seat they can drop a 10" and its much better over all for any type of music.
When the kids are inside you know the rules!
I would suggest going with a 10" under the seat either driver or passenger side rear. Plenty of boom and not much more expensive then an 8" will cost you.

So you guys are saying that when the kids are in the truck, I can just turn down the base, and then it should be ok? I just to be sure that my truck will still be "family friendly".

well first of all I don't know if you have an aftermarket cd player or not but if you do you could completely turn the sub off when they're in the car by just turning the sub output off. If you just have the factory one then when they install the amp have them run a switch in line with the remote wire so that you can just flip the switch and the amp for the sub won't turn on. An aftermarket cd player is definently the way to go though. There is a remarkable difference in sound quality.
As far as the box...I would do a 10". Here's how to look at it. If you have too much bass then you can just turn it down. If you find you don't have enough then you're stuck. You either have to live with it or redo it. I built a box under my back seat (both the drivers side and center rear seat) out of fiberglass for a JL Audio 10W6. I even covered the front of the box (the only part of it that is seen) in carbon fiber so that it matches the dash and stuff. It is definently enough bass for any kind of music. That is at a reasonable level...it's enough bass to fill in the music so the bass it still sounds natural and not overwhelming, and I can still crank it up and vibrate everything in the truck too.
So that's what I would do...a 10" and have them put in a switch to turn the amp off when you don't want the BOOM

bamorris...
We used to do this in a shop I worked... You can have them wire a small switch to the remote turn on for the sub amp.. (blue wire). When the kids are in the car, flip the switch so the amp does not come on... When they are not, flip the switch and rock...er country on down the road with the amp on. It can be hidden anywhere, and the remote turn on does not carry much current, so a small switch will do.
