Made a bad mistake

After cleaning my 04 FX4 last night I took my kids to school this morning. I noticed after driving about 20 minutes and 65 mph my 4wd switch was in 4L. I must have accidently done that while cleaning it. It stayed in 2wd the whole time and I have not checked to see if the 4wd is working. Is it possible that I messed it up bad. It ran good in 2wd

I believe 4L will only engage if the truck is running and in neutral not traveling more than 3 MPH. I could be wrong, but if you were driving in 4L you would definitely know it. The truck would run at very high RPM'S and you can only go like 20 MPH.

I agree with tireguy, you can’t go 65mph in 4L. You were still in two-wheel drive.

Yeah, I know it wasn't if 4L, but the switch was. I just hope it didn't damage anything

Yep, relax and dont worry about it. The truck knew not to switch into 4L and saved you. It is just fine.

For the 4L to engage, the truck must be running, in neutral, with the brake fully engaged. No worries...it never engaged.

in 4-low you can go faster than 20. When I was on the dunes I left my truck in 4-low all the time, I was traveling actually speeds slightly above 20 at times, and going up the hills I had my wheels spinning at like 45-50mph.

Is the front DS live at all times. Meaning that when the truck moves in 2wd, is the front DS spinning, or is there some disconnect on one of the front axels. I crawled underneath and did not see anything so I am assuming the the front DS spins with the truck in 2WD.

Whew - you had me worried there!

When you said you made a bad mistake, I thought maybe you told your wife that her butt did look big in that outfit!

I guarantee you would have known it if you had been in 4L....this is a smart truck, dont worry about it, like others have said, there is a procedure you have to go through before it will even go into 4L....

Well, all you guys were right. It did no damage. I tried it last night and it worked fine. I climbed some hills in 4h and 4L and no issues. I didn't tell the wife she looked big in those pants, but I may have a Samuel Adams anyway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
