1714 tuner or magnaflow catback first?

i am looking at getting a superchips tuner 1714 and a magnaflow si/so catback for my scab. for those that have both which one would you do first? obviously i would like to do both at the same time- just not going to happen right now though!

Do you want more power or more sound first? If you want the most boost for your truck, go with the tuner. If you want a cool exhaust note, go with the cat-back.

is the catback really necessary with the HP this truck is producing? Even with a tuner spending 500+ for exhaust is alot for maybe 5hp. There are very few things that need anything bigger than 2 1/2. If its sound your after just replace the muffler, unless of course u plan to supercharge your engine down the line and have need of the extra 1/2inch of pipe the catback will give you but then u run into y-pipe issues but thats something different. Just my opinion tho, i know there are quite a few others that disagree strongly.

vvyk3d,

The Magnaflow 15609 SI/SO is reportedly dyno proven to produce 17-19 HP on the 4.6l, and 18-21HP on the 5.4.

I paid less than $400.00 for the Mandrel bent, all stainless catback, and that included shipping.

I live on the Gulf Coast, and I did it for the rust protection of the Stainless Steel as much as I did it for performance.

My truck definitely breathes much better at the higher RPMs than before.

rbraughn,

the 04 has stainless on it already. So as far as rust protection you already had that. Im not disputing that magnaflow says their catback produces 18 and 20hp respectively for the different engines. Plus i believe (not quite sure) that its peak hp and its further up the band in terms of RPM. I was talking about real world need. When someones plunking down in excess of 400+ dollars they want to see the performance. I personally think that a tuner is more valuable for that $400 than exhaust in terms of noticeable expectations. Also where did u find the system for less than 400 shipped, thats a steal. Ive not seen it less than 450 without shipping anywhere. Would be most helpful for the guys that are looking for this system if you shared the info.

I put it on my 2001 Screw, not a 2004.

It has been over a year ago, But I got it from Full Line Exhaust. They were the cheapest I could find at the time.

The tuner was definitely the "best bang for the buck" out of the 2, but if you search the forums, you will see many people who have put this exhaust on their vehicles and are very happy with the performance gains.

I don't think I have seen one negative post from someone who actually put this exhaust on their vehicle

If it was junk, I'm sure there would be numerous people on here warning everyone to stay away from it. Just like they do for the throttle body spacers

never said it was junk sir, just said it was not the most necessary mod for a mostly stock truck. This is simply a difference of opinion. Lets agree to disagree.

I'd intake AND exhuast first, then tuner. Then pulleys. Why? Get the engine breathing right first, then take it up a notch with the Tuner and exploit your intake/exhuast. Then if you need that extra little something, pulleys!!!

That's my plan of attack... right after the Westin Bull Bar...

I would do tires and wheels first. Of course I didn't because my wife would notice those so instead i did tuner and now comes K&N FIPK. She would hear the exhaust.
