I agree that you shouldn't have to "shift" an automatic, except in certian conditions.
My Audi has an automatic designed to work both in full auto, auto sport mode and as a stick shift. Of course these trannys are made for this and using the manual mode is a blast to drive.

I will continue to persue.... Although I dont think I will be downshifting my auto tranny to aid in breaking.
